SUJAN JAWAI Leopard Camp

Suján Jawai Leopard Camp is a complex of luxury tents, set between Udaipur and Jodhpur, close to Kumbalgarh and Ranakpur. Set on eight hectares of land at the foot of the Aravalli hills, owned by Jaisal and Anjali Singh, it is a wild landscape of granite rocks and sandy riverbeds; home to a thriving population of leopards. Situated less than three hours outside Udaipur, Jawai by Suján offers unobstructed view into the local culture and a great chance to see leopards in the wild.

Nestled within the Aravalli hills, Suján Jawai Camp has 10 luxury tents. The spacious creamy-white tents, designed by the owners and hand-stitched in Jodhpur, come inclusive of private verandas with views of the dramatic plains. Days here are best spent soaking in the surrounds, often visited by antelope, Langur monkeys and wild boar. Breakfast is in the bush while on a game drive, lunch is buffet style in the camp and evening cocktails and dinner is by a bonfire under the stars.

Guests at the Suján Jawai will experience twice daily game drives, accompanied by experienced Rabari herdsmen guides to see a leopard in the wild. Close to the camp is one of the largest water reservoirs in western Rajasthan, home to an abundance of wildlife and birds, including flamingos and cranes. About an hour’s drive from the camp is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kumbulgarh Fort and the Jain temple complex of Ranakpur. For relaxation there is an infinity pool and a Spa Tent.

Stay Suján Jawai Leopard Camp comprises of just 10 luxury tents. All are set on raised platforms with dark grey slate floors and furnished with angular chrome and leather furniture used for beds and tables. Black and white leopard photographs hang on white canvas inners and ensuite bathrooms have modern facilities including twin vanities and showers. All have a private deck, perfect for sundowners while the Royal Tented Suite include a private pool with a spacious sunbathing deck.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Suján Jawai Leopard Camp. There is one Tented Suite (consisting of 2 tents connected by a canopy), which is best suited for groups or families. The Junior Ranger programme (with a ranger's uniform, a bird and mammal book, and an observation list) takes out kids on an educational adventure with an experienced ranger.

Dine Dining at the Suján Jawai Leopard Camp follows the daily routine that starts with an early morning game drive. Breakfast is in the bush with hot tea or coffee. Lunches are basically buffet-style in the dining tent, followed by a refreshing siesta in the hot Indian summer. Dinners are the main culinary event, served in a romantic environment of multi lanterns, under the star-lit sky. The cuisine is focused on Indian dishes and prepared with fresh ingredients by expert local chefs.

Relax The lounge tent at the Suján Jawai Leopard Camp has a selection of books and periodicals and is a good place to relax during the day. Alternatively, guests can take a siesta in their air-conditioned tents. For relaxation there is a swimming pool offering wide views of the surrounding landscape and a discreetly located spa, offering wellness therapies and treatments.

Experience Morning tea at Suján Jawai Leopard Camp is served colonial style to your tent, soon followed by a jeep safari. Half the adventure is in accompanying expert local guides who search for tell-tale signs of leopard’s movement in the night and calculate their likely resting place during the day. The highlight is of course, finding and watching it in the wild; on a granite outcrop or ancient temple. Birdwatchers can take guided walks and guests can go cycling to explore nearby villages.

Location Jawai is located between Udaipur and Jodhpur, approximately 130km from both. The location allows comfortable access to the NESCO world heritage site Kumbalgarh Fort.

Getting there Closest airports are Udaipur and Jodhpur with regular flights daily from Delhi or Mumbai. It is then a 3 hour drive from both airports. Alternatively catch an overnight train from New Delhi to Jawai Bandh station, only 20 minutes from the camp.

When to go Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away from European winters. Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. Although it rarely rains in Rajasthan, the temperature drops slightly during the Monsoon period from July to September, and humidity increases. Post-monsoon period from October to November is the official "tourist season" in Rajasthan that extends into the winter months from December to March when its warm during the day and chilly at night.
