Taiwan Tours & Holidays

Small Group Tours & Tailor-Made Holidays

A small island of extraordinary density and variety, Taiwan punches far above its geographic weight as a travel destination — combining some of the finest Chinese cultural heritage outside the mainland, a landscape of dramatic gorges, volcanic peaks and hot spring valleys, and a night market food culture so exceptional that it has earned the island a global reputation as one of the great culinary destinations of Asia. It is a country that rewards every traveller who discovers it with an enthusiasm bordering on evangelical.

Taiwan's indigenous heritage — the Austronesian peoples who have inhabited the island for thousands of years before Chinese settlement — adds a further dimension of cultural richness to a destination already remarkable for its Qing dynasty temples, Japanese colonial architecture, aboriginal festival traditions and the National Palace Museum's peerless collection of Chinese imperial art. The island's east coast, largely bypassed by conventional tourism, offers perhaps the most dramatic natural scenery in East Asia.

At Asian Geographical, our East Asia specialists design tailor-made Taiwan holidays and small group tours that reveal the full spectrum of this captivating island. Whether exploring the temple districts of Tainan — Taiwan's ancient capital — cycling the stunning East Rift Valley, hiking through the marble walls of Taroko Gorge, discovering the aboriginal villages of the central mountains or eating your way through Taipei's extraordinary night markets, we craft Taiwan itineraries of exceptional depth, flavour and discovery.

Taiwan Highlights

TAROKO GORGE TAIWAN LANDSCAPES: Taroko Gorge on Taiwan's east coast is one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in Asia — a 20-kilometre marble-walled gorge of breathtaking scale carved by the Liwu River through the Central Mountain Range. The surrounding Taroko National Park encompasses some of the finest hiking in East Asia, from the accessible Shakadang Trail to the demanding clifftop Zhuilu Old Road with extraordinary views.

TAIWAN NIGHT MARKETS FOOD CULTURE: Taiwan's night markets are one of Asia's great culinary institutions — sprawling, fragrant, intoxicatingly atmospheric bazaars that come alive after dark in every city and town offering an extraordinary variety of dishes. Taipei's Shilin Night Market is the most famous, but the Raohe Street market and the night market cultures of Tainan and Kaohsiung each have their own devoted champions among Taiwan's obsessive food community.

NATIONAL PALACE MUSEUM TAIPEI: The National Palace Museum in Taipei houses one of the finest collections of Chinese imperial art in the world — nearly 700,000 objects spanning 8,000 years of Chinese civilisation, brought to Taiwan in 1948 during the Chinese Civil War. The Jadeite Cabbage, the Meat-shaped Stone and the Mao Gong Ding bronze cauldron are among its most celebrated treasures in an extraordinary breadth of imperial objects.

TAIWAN ABORIGINAL CULTURE HERITAGE: Taiwan's sixteen officially recognised indigenous peoples — descendants of Austronesian settlers who arrived thousands of years before Chinese migration — maintain living cultural traditions of great richness. The Taroko and Seediq of the central mountains, the Amis of the East Rift Valley and the Rukai and Paiwan of the south, with their warrior culture and exquisite bead jewellery, create a heritage unique in East Asia.

TAIWAN HOT SPRINGS AND LANDSCAPES: Taiwan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and its volcanic geology has blessed the island with some of the finest hot spring resources in Asia — from the sulphur springs of Beitou on Taipei's doorstep to the remote high-altitude hot springs of the central mountains. The extraordinary landscapes of Yangmingshan National Park and the volcanic valleys of the northeast make Taiwan geologically fascinating.

TAINAN ANCIENT CAPITAL TAIWAN: Taiwan's oldest and most historically significant city, Tainan served as the island's capital for over two centuries and preserves the richest repository of traditional Taiwanese culture. Over 200 temples crowd the old city streets, including the oldest Confucius Temple in Taiwan, while Tainan's street food culture — built around its ancient market traditions — is considered by many Taiwanese simply the finest on the island.

Why Choose Asian Geographical
Why Choose Asian Geographical

Exclusively Asia

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Taiwan Regions

TAIPEI AND THE NORTHERN COAST: Taiwan's vibrant capital is one of the most rewarding cities in East Asia — where the extraordinary National Palace Museum, Art Deco presidential buildings and the soaring Taipei 101 coexist with the finest night markets, hotpot restaurants and teahouses in Asia. The surrounding northern coast offers the hot spring valley of Beitou, the Yangmingshan volcanic national park and the dramatic Northeast Coast Scenic Area.

TAROKO AND THE EAST COAST: Taiwan's eastern coastline offers the island's most dramatic and unspoilt natural scenery. The marble walls of Taroko Gorge are the centrepiece, but the East Rift Valley extending south from Hualien offers extraordinary cycling through rice paddies and indigenous villages, and the hot spring resort of Zhiben adds further appeal. The annual Amis Harvest Festival at Taitung is the finest indigenous cultural celebration in Taiwan.

SUN MOON LAKE AND CENTRAL TAIWAN: Sun Moon Lake — Taiwan's largest, set among forested hills at 748 metres — is the most celebrated scenic destination in central Taiwan, its jade-green waters ringed by Thao aboriginal villages and excellent cycling paths. The surrounding Nantou County offers the Alishan Forest Railway — one of Asia's great heritage rail journeys — and the famous cloud sea sunrise above the mountain forests.

TAINAN AND THE ANCIENT SOUTH: Tainan is the most historically and gastronomically rewarding city on the island — where over 200 temples crowd a compact old city that served as the seat of Dutch, Ming loyalist and Qing dynasty power for centuries. The Anping Old Fort, Chihkan Tower and the city's legendary street food — considered by many Taiwanese the finest on the island — make Tainan unmissable.

KAOHSIUNG AND THE SOUTH COAST: Taiwan's southern port city has reinvented itself as one of the island's most vibrant urban destinations — a waterfront city of excellent art museums, outstanding night market food and the world's first shipping container arts district at Pier-2. The nearby Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Centre and the coastal scenery of Kenting National Park at the island's southern tip complete a varied southern Taiwan itinerary.

JIUFEN AND THE NORTHEAST HIGHLANDS: The former gold mining town of Jiufen, cascading down a steep hillside above Taiwan's northeast coast, is one of the most atmospheric and visually distinctive towns in the country — a maze of red lantern-lit stone staircases and teahouses perched over the Pacific. The surrounding Ruifang district also offers the Jinguashi Gold Museum and the dramatic volcanic coastline of Yeliu Geopark just beyond.

WEATHER IN Taiwan

The best time to visit Taiwan is from October to April, when the weather is generally cooler and more comfortable for sightseeing, temples, night markets and mountain scenery. Summers are hot and humid, with heavier rain and possible typhoons, especially from June to September.

  • Taiwan's weather varies across its regions due to its diverse landscape. In the north, including Taipei, the climate is subtropical, with hot and humid summers, and mild winters. The northeast experiences more rainfall, while the northwest is drier. Central Taiwan, home to Taichung and Sun Moon Lake, has a similar climate but with slightly cooler temperatures. The east coast is characterized by dramatic mountains and rugged coastline, experiencing more rainfall and typhoons, especially during the summer months. The south, including Kaohsiung and Tainan, boasts a tropical climate with high temperatures year-round.
  • The best time to visit Taiwan depends on your preferences and activities. Generally, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal, with pleasant temperatures and lower rainfall. Spring brings cherry blossoms in full bloom, while autumn offers stunning foliage. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid, with occasional typhoons, but it's perfect for beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts. Winter (December to February) brings cooler temperatures, particularly in the north, making it suitable for exploring cultural attractions and enjoying hot springs.
  • Ultimately, the best time to go to Taiwan depends on your interests and tolerance for weather conditions. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or simply want to indulge in Taiwanese cuisine, there's something for everyone year-round.
