Coconut Lagoon is a charming resort, set near the stunning Vembanad Lake in Kumarakom, Kerala. Accessible only by boat from the shores of Vembanad lake, the resort comprises of old villas, mansions and bungalows. Each of these were sourced from the local surroundings and transported piece by piece to the present location, and then painstaking restored by local craftsmen. The result is a complex of luxuriously furnished heritage properties – a perfect choice for discerning travellers.

Housed within this eco-friendly, traditional Keralan village style Coconut Lagoon, are 50 heritage cottages. Grouped into villas, mansions and bungalows, these are scattered throughout the resort’s tropical forest, many with their own gardens, private pools and views of the canals. Each cottage is a work of art, built in traditional wood based architecture and ancient science of craftsmanship. Inside, rooms are luxuriously furnished to complement the elegance of these homesteads.

Dining at the Coconut Lagoon is a gourmet affair. All meals are carefully prepared by expert local chefs using traditional recipes, fresh spices and locally sourced organic ingredients. For relaxation there is a large swimming pool but the real highlight is the Ayurvedic centre that encapsulates an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. Activities include learning to play the Keralan Drums, watch a Keralan cultural show or walk around the marshes to spot some rare birds.

Stay Coconut Lagoon resort features 50 villas, mansions and bungalows. The mansions have two stories while the villas and bungalows are set at single level. Each of the air-conditioned cottages with traditional Kerala style architecture are set along irrigation canals in a coconut grove. Inside, the décor is minimalist; open beamed ceilings, terracotta tiled floors, period style and antique furniture with plush beds and luxury bathrooms, some with enclosed gardens and private pools. 

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Coconut Lagoon. There is plenty to do here to keep everyone entertained; visit a nearby butterfly garden and bird sanctuary or play in the exclusive children's pool at the hotel. Babysitting service can be arranged upon request.

Dine The lakeside Ayemenem restaurant at the Coconut Lagoon resort is renowned for its superb traditional cuisine and authentic setting. Its famous for its age old local favourites like fish curry and tapioca with crushed bird’s eye chilly. Breakfast and lunches are mixed with western dishes while dinner is by candle light is mostly focussed on seafood brought daily by the local fisherman.

Relax One of the highlights of the Coconut Lagoon is their Ayurvedic centre. You are likely to be quizzed about your health by a doctor who will then make suggestions for treatments. Many of the Ayurvedic treatments are to be taken daily for a period of a week and some were up to 20 days long. There is also an outdoor swimming pool and Yoga classes held every morning.

Experience Named after Kumaran, the deity of Kumarakom's oldest temple, the region around the Coconut Lagoon resort abounds in temples, known for their unique art and architecture. Activities in the area include bird watching tours, cycling around nearby plantations, visiting the Kavanar bird sanctuary and taking houseboat cruise through Kerala’s awe-inspiring backwaters. Other cultural experiences include watching Kathakali, Kerala's classical dance, or Kalari, Kerala's very own form of martial art.
 


 

Location Coconut Lagoon is located in an abandoned coconut plantation on the shores of the Vembanad Lake in Kumarakom.

Getting there Fly to Cochin International Airport. Cochin is the nearest airport to Coconut Lagoon. From Cochin, it is 45 km to Puthenangadi boat landing site and then 25-minute boat ride to Coconut Lagoon. Total approximate time from airport to Coconut Lagoon is about 1.5-hour.

When to go Isolated from much of India by the Western Ghats, the climate of Kerala & Karnataka is tropical. The best time to visit is from January through to April. Summer is hot and humid; the monsoon season arrives in early June and lasts till August. While September can be dry and humid. There can be a little rain in October and November, cooling off around December and lasting until February.
