Suján Rajmahal Palace is a contemporary boutique hotel, set in the heart of Jaipur city. Owned by the royal family of Jaipur, it was once the British Residency and then a private home of the last Maharajah of Jaipur and his glamorous wife Gayatri Devi. It has hosted the Queen and Prince Philip as well as Jackie Onassis, Lord and Lady Mountbatten. Now painstaking restored, this small Art Deco structure makes a bold contemporary take on Indian palatial style and Rajput grandeur.
Built in the 1720s and now exquisitely restored, Suján Rajmahal Palace houses just 15 spacious rooms and suites. Expect vibrant patterned wallpapers, traditional Indian artworks, crystal chandeliers, silk cushions and antique glass vases holding fresh rose petals. Reminiscent of English Georgian architecture, the palace has been transformed but original features remain from the Mughal era; mirrored doors and ceilings and an original marble staircase.
Three dining options at Suján Rajmahal Palace offer a choice of contemporary Indian and western cuisine prepare by Relais and Châteaux trained chefs. For relaxation there is a regal Art Deco swimming pool surrounded by manicured gardens and Suján Spa offering a range of massages. In the surrounds is the fabled Pink City where guests spend most of their day exploring forts and palaces and shopping for gems, hand printed paper or miniature paintings.
Amenities
Stay The Suján Rajmahal offers just 14 rooms and suites. These include two magnificent Royal Maharaja and Maharani apartments, which are splendidly luxurious and come complete with private entrance halls and dedicated butler service. The four Royal Suites, include the Queen Elizabeth II Suite, and the Kennedy Suite, that was frequented by the glamorous Jackie Kennedy. Rooms feature gorgeous bell chandeliers, mirrored doors and modern furniture with 24-hour butler service.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Suján Rajmahal Palace, but there are no specific facilities available for children as the place is more suited to couples. However, all rooms are spacious enough to fit a baby cot or rollaway bed if required. Babysitting service can be arranged, on request.
Dine Dining is a regal experience at Suján Rajmahal Palace; whether you breakfast in the 51 Shades of Pink dining room (which in keeping with the country house concept has no breakfast hours), lunch in the glass-walled Colonnade overlooking the gardens or opt for a la carte dinner at the formal dining room decorated with cut glass and polished silver. The three restaurants serve rich Rajasthani meat curries beloved of Jaipur royals and European classics, paired with a fine selection of wines.
Relax The Polo Bar at the Suján Rajmahal Palace is a lovely spot to unwind with an evening cocktail. There is also a regal Art Deco–era swimming pool lined with lanterns and flanked by manicured gardens. For ultimate relaxation there is Suján Spa, located in Rang Niwas, offering a carefully selected menu of therapies that revitalize and relax mind and body.
Experience Jaipur is known for the royal splendour of its forts, palaces and breathtaking landscapes. To gain an appreciation of its history ask staff at Suján Rajmahal Palace to arrange a private tour of the City Palace, Amber Fort and even tickets to a royal box to witness a polo match. Visit the Birla Temple, a contemporary white marble marvel situated below the Moti Dungri Fort, then see Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone tower built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh ji.
Location On Sardar Patel Marg, a quiet road off MI road, it is close to the walled Pink City, spectacular forts, and the unique shopping bazaars of Jaipur.
Getting there Fly to Delhi Indira Gandhi International followed by a 1-hour domestic flight to Jaipur. It's a 20-minute drive from Jaipur airport to Sujan Rajmahal. Alternatively, it's a 5-hour drive from Delhi.
When to go Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away from European winters. Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. Although it rarely rains in Rajasthan, the temperature drops slightly during the Monsoon period from July to September, and humidity increases. Post-monsoon period from October to November is the official "tourist season" in Rajasthan that extends into the winter months from December to March when its warm during the day and chilly at night.
