Cambodia Tours & Holidays

Small Group Tours & Tailor-Made Holidays

Home to one of the greatest archaeological wonders of the world, Cambodia is a destination of profound historical depth, extraordinary natural beauty and a resilience of spirit that moves every traveller who encounters it. The vast temple complex of Angkor — seat of the Khmer Empire that once dominated Southeast Asia — is a monument to human ambition and artistry on a scale that simply defies expectation, and yet Cambodia offers so much more than its most famous sight.

Beyond Angkor, Cambodia unfolds into a country of lazy rivers, floating villages, emerald rice paddies and a coastline of white sand beaches and undeveloped islands that rival anywhere in Southeast Asia. The capital Phnom Penh, straddling the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, is a city of genuine sophistication — its riverside promenade, excellent restaurants and world-class museums making it one of the most compelling capitals in the region.

At Asian Geographical, we design tailor-made Cambodia holidays and small group tours that go far beyond the temples of Angkor. From the floating villages of Tonle Sap lake and the ancient jungle temple of Preah Vihear to the pristine islands of Koh Rong and the red earth roads of the remote northeast, our Southeast Asia specialists craft Cambodia itineraries of exceptional depth, sensitivity and discovery.

Cambodia Highlights

ANGKOR WAT CAMBODIA TEMPLES: The temple complex of Angkor is one of the greatest achievements of human civilisation — a vast sacred landscape of over a thousand temples built by the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries. Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument on earth, is matched in grandeur by the enigmatic Bayon and the jungle-strangled Ta Prohm, whose roots and stones have merged over the centuries.

MEKONG RIVER CAMBODIA: The great Mekong flows through the heart of Cambodia, sustaining an extraordinary ecosystem and a way of river life little changed over centuries. A journey by boat from Kratie — where rare Irrawaddy dolphins surface in the late afternoon — to Phnom Penh reveals a Cambodia of wooden stilt houses, Buddhist temples shimmering in the heat and a landscape of unhurried, timeless beauty.

PHNOM PENH CULTURAL HERITAGE: Cambodia's capital is a city of genuine complexity — where the elegant French colonial riverfront, the magnificent Royal Palace and the extraordinary National Museum of Khmer Art coexist with the deeply sobering Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields. Understanding Cambodia means grappling with both its glorious ancient past and its traumatic recent history, and Phnom Penh is where that reckoning begins.

TONLE SAP LAKE CAMBODIA: The Tonle Sap — Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake — swells to six times its dry-season size during the monsoon floods, sustaining floating villages, extraordinary biodiversity and one of the world's most productive inland fisheries. A boat journey through the floating communities of Kompong Phluk or Mechrey at sunset is among Cambodia's most memorable and moving experiences.

CAMBODIA REMOTE TEMPLES: Beyond Angkor lies a Cambodia of remote temples rewarding the curious traveller. Preah Vihear, perched on a clifftop on the Thai border, is one of the finest Khmer temples in existence. Koh Ker — a remote jungle complex of pyramidal temples — and the vast 12th-century Banteay Chhmar, being sensitively restored by local communities, offer encounters with Khmer heritage in conditions of near-total solitude.

CAMBODIA BEACHES AND ISLANDS: Cambodia's Gulf of Thailand coastline offers some of the most undeveloped beaches in Southeast Asia — white sand bays, mangrove-fringed estuaries and tropical islands with a languid atmosphere increasingly rare in the region. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem offer the finest combination of pristine beaches and coral reefs, while the coastal town of Kampot is one of the most charming in Cambodia.

Resort

Alila Villas Koh Russey is an ultra-luxury resort, set in the Kog Rong archipelago in the Gulf of Siam, southern Cambodia. Known for its pristine bays, dramatic headlands, powder sand beaches and tropical forests, Koh Russey, or Bamboo Island as it is commonly known is only a 15-minute boat ride from the Cambodian coast and 30 minutes from Sihanoukville’s airport. Famed for its emerald waters, azure sky and amazing views, it offers an attractive alternative to Koh Samui and Phuket.

Historic

In true Aman style, the general manager of the Amansara Villa presented us with a three-day itinerary of our tour of the Angkor Wat temples, the reason for which we had come here to stay. We have visited Aman hotels and villas in the past and from our experience with Aman we trust their judgment. So, we leave the itinerary un-altered and let them do what they know best.

Resort

Anantara Angkor Resort & Spa is an award-winning luxury hotel, set on the outskirts of Siem Reap in Northwest Cambodia. Modestly-sized and designed in Khmer-style with subtle use of state-of-the-art amenities, this Anantara property offers an authentic local environment with modern luxuries. Situated just outside the city centre and 15 minutes from the Angkor Archaeological Park, it makes a great resort for those looking to get away from the crowds and yet stay close to the town.

Boat/Yacht

Aqua Mekong, a luxury river cruise hotel in Cambodia, is an architectural marvel that harmoniously blends traditional Cambodian aesthetics with contemporary design. The vessel's sleek, modern lines are complemented by elements inspired by Khmer architecture, creating a visually striking and culturally rich environment. The use of sustainably sourced local materials further enhances its authentic feel, seamlessly integrating the elegance of Cambodia's heritage with modern comforts.

Boutique

Heritage Suites hotel is a beautiful small boutique heritage hotel in Siem Reap, close to the Angkor temples. Located on a quiet residential street and near the Angkor museum, it’s well placed for soaking up the highlights of Siem Reap. The charming colonial-era façade is a throwback to the bygone glamour of the French days but once inside Heritage Suites conceals a collection of intimate boutique bungalows set amid a lush tropical garden.

Boutique

Jaya House River Park is a charming boutique hotel, set along the banks of the Siem Reap River, in Northwest Cambodia. Surrounded by stunning tropical gardens, the hotel incorporates a unique design inspired by 1960s Cambodian Modernism. Interiors showcase the work of Siem Reap’s artisans on wood and local stone, a showstopping sculpture from Siem Reap-based British artist Sasha Constable graces the lobby and solid silver tiles, line its one-of-a-kind swimming pool.

Resort

Knai Bang Chatt Resort is a small property, designed in minimalist style, adapted from the ancient Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi. Lying in the dappled shade of a stumpy tree on Koh Tonsay, or Rabbit Island, just off the Cambodian coastal village Kep, one feels an overwhelming calm. It comprises three Le Corbusier–influenced villas and one modern house, to form one intimate retreat. This historic property offers 11 minimalist-chic rooms with views of either the calm Gulf of Thailand or artfully landscaped gardens.

Boutique

The La Rose Suites boutique hotel is located in the heart of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's bustling capital. Although one of the new hotels in town, it has already established itself as likeable up-comer that is both hip and relaxed, blending both Khmer tradition with Asian hospitality. The boutique style design is inspired by the charming French Indochina architecture, while the interiors reflect the grandeur of Angkor Wat. Ideal for a relaxing stay in this vibrant city, La Rose Suites is just minutes away from many of Phnom Penh's major attractions.

Historic

La Villa is a boutique hotel, set near the heart of Battambang’s city centre, in northwest Cambodia. Built by a wealthy local tradesman in the 1930s, this colonial townhouse went into disrepair during the Khmer rouge era. Now fully refurbished, it is swathed in Old World charm; antique armoires, four-poster beds, richly patterned floor tiles and vintage ceiling lamps fill the space, albeit with some modern luxuries for the discerning traveller.

Boutique

Maison Polanka is a heritage boutique retreat, set near the Royal Residence in Siem Reap, Northwestern Cambodia. Hidden behind Wat Polanka in a quiet residential quarter northeast of town, Maison Polanka was once the French-Khmer owners’ family home. Set on the eastern side of the Siem Reap River and just a short walk away from local markets, this luxurious, and private, boutique hotel is ideal for families or small groups wanting to explore the Angkor temples.

Why Choose Asian Geographical
Why Choose Asian Geographical

Exclusively Asia

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Cambodia Regions

SIEM REAP AND THE ANGKOR REGION: Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and one of the most visitor-ready towns in Southeast Asia — excellent restaurants, lively night markets and sophisticated infrastructure that belies its small size. The temples demand at least three days to explore, and the surrounding region offers the floating villages of Tonle Sap, the silk weaving village of Kompong Kleang and outstanding Khmer cooking classes.

PHNOM PENH AND THE MEKONG HEARTLAND: Cambodia's capital rewards more time than most itineraries allow — a riverside city where the Royal Palace, the National Museum and the sobering memorials of the Khmer Rouge era tell a complex and compelling national story. The surrounding region offers the silver pagodas of Udong and the pottery villages of Kompong Chhnang.

BATTAMBANG AND NORTHWESTERN CAMBODIA: The relaxed riverside town of Battambang is Cambodia's second city and one of its most rewarding — a place of elegant French colonial architecture, excellent art galleries and a thriving creative scene. The surrounding countryside offers bamboo train rides, bat cave temples and the Phnom Sampeau hilltop sanctuary, with its extraordinary evening exodus of bats at sunset.

KAMPOT, KEP AND THE SOUTHERN COAST: Cambodia's south coast is a world apart from the temples of the north — a languid landscape of pepper plantations, mangrove rivers, salt flats and colonial-era riverside towns. Kampot, with its French colonial architecture and beautiful Bokor Hill Station above, and the tiny crab-market town of Kep are the twin highlights of a coastal Cambodia that rewards those willing to slow down.

SIHANOUKVILLE AND THE CAMBODIAN ISLANDS: While Sihanoukville itself has changed dramatically in recent years, the islands offshore — particularly Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem — remain some of the most beautiful and unspoilt in Southeast Asia. Long stretches of white sand beach, bioluminescent plankton and crystal-clear water for snorkelling make these islands a perfect complement to the Cambodian mainland.

KRATIE AND THE MEKONG DOLPHINS: The riverside town of Kratie in northeastern Cambodia is home to one of the rarest wildlife encounters in Southeast Asia — the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, which survives in a protected stretch of the Mekong just upstream from town. The surrounding region is also home to the Mondulkiri plateau — a landscape of waterfalls, elephant sanctuaries and indigenous Bunong communities of exceptional cultural interest.

WEATHER IN Cambodia

The best time to visit Cambodia is from November to March, when the weather is drier and more comfortable for Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh, Tonle Sap and cultural touring. April can be very hot, while the green season brings heavier showers, lush landscapes and fewer visitors.

  • Cambodia's weather varies across its regions due to its tropical climate influenced by the monsoon seasons. In general, the country experiences two main seasons: the rainy season and the dry season.
  • In the central and southern regions, including the capital city Phnom Penh, the weather follows a typical tropical monsoon pattern. The rainy season spans from May to October, with heavy rainfall and high humidity. This period brings relief from the scorching heat, with temperatures ranging from 25°c to 35°c. Conversely, the dry season, from November to April, sees little to no rainfall and lower humidity levels. Temperatures during this time can soar to around 40°c, making it hot and dry, particularly in April.
  • In the northern and northeastern regions, such as Siem Reap and Battambang, the weather is similar but with slight variations. The rainy season starts a bit earlier, typically in April or May, and lasts until October. The dry season remains from November to April, but temperatures may be slightly cooler compared to the central and southern regions due to higher elevation.
  • Coastal areas like Sihanoukville experience a more temperate climate, with less temperature variation between the seasons. The rainy season is milder, lasting from May to October, while the dry season from November to April brings sunny days with occasional rainfall.
  • Overall, Cambodia's weather offers a diverse climate experience across its regions, making it important for visitors to plan their travels accordingly.
