The La Résidence d'Angkor property is assessed over a lotus-filled moat, across which the two-storey Khmer-style building with high-ceiling wooden foyer, reflects a soothing décor. Inside, the foyer's sidewalls are covered with enormous relief of figures that we later saw at Angkor Wat. In the centre is an enormous teak desk, cut out from a single giant tree. Public spaces are filled with polished teak furniture and gleaming silk and cotton décor that blends Cambodian and colonial influences.
The entire space on Song Saa Private Island, is beautifully constructed using natural materials, a high ceiling with an all-encompassing canopy so as to integrate seamlessly into the natural space. At the centre of its architectural design is its creative art by Melita, Rory Hunter’s lovely wife. Her creativity and personal touch can be felt even in our two bedrooms villa, so beautifully designed. The focus is on relaxing the mind; a sunken bath, full-length windows and a small pool.
In true Aman style, the general manager of the Amansara Villa presented us with a three-day itinerary of our tour of the Angkor Wat temples, the reason for which we had come here to stay. We have visited Aman hotels and villas in the past and from our experience with Aman we trust their judgment. So, we leave the itinerary un-altered and let them do what they know best.
