Tibet Tours & Holidays

Small Group Tours & Tailor-Made Holidays

Perched on the highest plateau on earth at an average elevation of over 4,500 metres, Tibet is a destination of unparalleled spiritual grandeur and physical drama. The Roof of the World, as it is known, is a landscape of vast open plains, sacred lakes, snow-capped peaks and ancient monastery complexes that have defined Tibetan Buddhist civilisation for over a thousand years. For those who make the journey, Tibet is transformative in a way few destinations can equal.

Lhasa, Tibet's ancient capital, is a city of extraordinary contrasts — where the magnificent Potala Palace looks down on a modern Chinese city, yet the Barkhor pilgrimage circuit around the Jokhang Temple preserves an atmosphere of devotion and medieval life that feels entirely removed from the contemporary world. Beyond Lhasa, Tibet opens into immensities of space and silence — across the Changtang plateau to the base of Everest's north face and the sacred shores of Namtso Lake.

At Asian Geographical, our Himalaya specialists craft tailor-made Tibet holidays and small group tours that navigate this complex and deeply rewarding destination with care and expertise. From the sacred temples of Lhasa to the remote monastery of Samye and the high-altitude wilderness of the northern plateau, we design Tibet itineraries that honour the depth and spiritual significance of this truly extraordinary place.

Tibet Highlights

POTALA PALACE LHASA TIBET: Rising thirteen storeys above the Lhasa valley, the Potala Palace is one of the most magnificent buildings in Asia — a fortress-palace of breathtaking scale that served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas for three centuries. Its 1,000 rooms contain priceless collections of Buddhist art, golden stupas and ancient manuscripts, and the view across Lhasa from its upper terraces is simply unforgettable.

TIBET SACRED MONASTERIES: Tibet's monastery complexes are among the great architectural and spiritual achievements of the Buddhist world. Drepung, Sera and Ganden — the three great Gelug monasteries surrounding Lhasa — once housed thousands of monks and remain centres of living practice. Further afield, the ancient Samye Monastery — Tibet's first — and the extraordinary cliff-face complex of Pelkor Chode in Gyantse rank among Asia's most remarkable religious sites.

TIBET HIGH ALTITUDE LANDSCAPES: The Tibetan Plateau is one of the most extraordinary natural environments on earth — a vast, elevated wilderness of open grassland, glacial lakes and snow-capped peaks stretching to every horizon. Namtso Lake, one of the world's highest saltwater lakes at 4,718 metres, shimmers a supernatural turquoise beneath the peaks of the Nyenchen Tanglha range, while the drive to Everest Base Camp on the northern approach crosses landscapes of surpassing desolation and grandeur.

EVEREST NORTH FACE TIBET: The Tibetan approach to Everest is a journey of a completely different character to the Nepali south side — a long drive across the high plateau through yak herder camps and remote checkpoint towns, culminating at Rongbuk Monastery, the world's highest monastery at 5,000 metres, with the north face of Everest filling the valley above. The sheer scale and solitude of this approach makes it one of the most powerful experiences Tibet has to offer.

Why Choose Asian Geographical
Why Choose Asian Geographical

Exclusively Asia

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Tibet Regions

LHASA AND THE SACRED CAPITAL: Tibet's ancient capital is the spiritual heart of the Tibetan world — where the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor pilgrimage circuit preserve traditions stretching back over a millennium. The surrounding valley shelters the three great monasteries of Drepung, Sera and Ganden, and the city rewards slow, unhurried exploration on foot through its ancient lanes.

GYANTSE, SHIGATSE AND THE SOUTHERN ROAD: The overland route from Lhasa west towards Nepal is one of the great road journeys of Asia — passing through Gyantse, with its remarkable multi-storeyed Kumbum stupa, and Shigatse, home to the Tashilhunpo Monastery, seat of the Panchen Lamas. The high passes and turquoise lakes en route add extraordinary natural drama to this journey.

EVEREST BASE CAMP AND WESTERN TIBET: The drive from Shigatse south to Everest Base Camp is an experience of raw, elemental grandeur — culminating at Rongbuk Monastery with the north face of the world's highest peak filling the valley above. The remote western Tibet beyond, centred on sacred Mount Kailash — revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bon practitioners alike — is among the most spiritually significant places on earth.

NAMTSO LAKE AND THE NORTHERN PLATEAU: North of Lhasa lies the vast Changtang Plateau — a high-altitude wilderness of grassland, glacial lakes and nomadic herder camps where wild yak and Tibetan antelope roam freely. Namtso Lake, shimmering at 4,718 metres amid supernatural beauty, is the most accessible highlight of this extraordinary region and an experience of lasting, meditative power and profound silence.

WEATHER IN Tibet

The best time to visit Tibet is from May to October, when the weather is generally milder and highland routes are more accessible. Spring and autumn are especially good for Lhasa, monasteries, sacred lakes and Everest views, with clearer skies and more comfortable daytime temperatures.

Tibet's weather varies greatly across its vast and diverse landscape, influenced by its high altitude and geographic features. Generally, Tibet experiences a harsh, continental climate with low temperatures and sparse precipitation. However, weather conditions can differ significantly between regions.

In central Tibet, including Lhasa, the capital city, summers are relatively mild with average temperatures ranging from 15°c to 25°c. Winters, on the other hand, are cold and dry, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. Eastern Tibet, encompassing areas like Nyingchi and Chamdo, enjoys a more moderate climate due to lower altitudes and increased rainfall. Summers are cool and pleasant, while winters are less severe compared to central Tibet.

Western Tibet, including areas like Ngari and Nagqu, is characterized by harsher conditions with colder temperatures and limited precipitation. The region is known for its stark landscapes and extreme weather fluctuations.

The best time to visit Tibet depends on the activities you plan to undertake and the regions you wish to explore. Generally, the months of April to October are considered ideal for travel, as temperatures are milder, and roads are more accessible due to less snowfall. However, summer months can also bring occasional showers, so be prepared for some rain, especially in eastern Tibet. Autumn, from September to November, offers crisp weather and stunning landscapes adorned with vibrant foliage, making it another popular time to visit. Ultimately, the best time to go to Tibet depends on your preferences and interests, whether it's trekking, exploring cultural sites, or witnessing unique festivals like the Tibetan New Year.
