Tanjore Hi is a heritage boutique hotel, set in the heart of Tanjore city in Tamil Nadu. Situated at a walking distance from the palace, this quirky hotel is a refurbished royal home dating back to the 1940s. It has been recently restored and styled with traditional strokes of contemporary touches like the backlit photo collages in shades of pink and blue. The hotel serves as a perfect destination for those looking for a comfortable overnight or a short stay to explore the areas around.
There are just 14 vintage style rooms in Tanjore Hi. All are individually designed, contemporary in style with plush beds, polished floors with a forceful throw of cobalt blue, which follows into the spacious bathrooms. Chola, its rooftop restaurant serves a mélange of French and Indian cuisine created for an international palate, and offers a variety of organic coffees and other items from the group’s own plantations and farms. And, there’s an open-air terrace bar.
Madurai and Trichy are easily accessible from Tanjore Hi and at distance of 3 hours, make it a very comfortable base for the travellers passing through and connecting to different areas. The 9th-century AD, Nisumba Soodhani (Durga) temple stands close to the hotel and the famous Brihadisvara temple is a stone's throw away. Other heritage sites include the Royal Palace Museum and the Aiyarappar, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the village of Tiruvaiyaru.

All are individually designed in minimalist, contemporary style with polished wooden floors, plush beds draped in fine linen and windows with folding shutters. The hotel’s trademark cobalt blue runs from its façade, through its corridors and rooms, showing mostly on floors, walls or bathrooms.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Tanjore Hi, but there are no special facilities available for children. However, there is a small kid's club and babysitting service can be arranged, upon request.
Dine The rooftop Chola restaurant at Tanjore Hi serves traditional Tamil and Western cuisine using fresh, ingredients sourced from their two ecological farms certified by IMO Switzerland. All the bread, jam and pastries are homemade and meals are made-to-order, using as fresh and organic products. The restaurant also promotes healthy, Ayurvedic, Low Carb, Vegan and Gluten free food. Guests are welcome to speak with the chef for special meal requests.
Relax There are plenty of spaces within Tanjore Hi to relax. The roof garden terrace serves beer and a small selection of wines from around the world. There is a high-speed internet and a garden to relax.
Experience Tanjore (Thanjavur) was the capital of the Chola Kingdom between the 10th and 14th Centuries and became a major cultural centre. Located next to the historic Tanjore Palace, Tanjore Hi offers a perfect gateway to Tanjore and its many heritage sites to include Brihadisvara Temple, the Royal Palace Museum and the Thanjavur Maratha Palace. Not-to-be-missed are lecture demonstrations of Tanjavur and Bharatanatyam dances by proficient dancers.
Location Located in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, its is very well placed in the heart of the city. The Tanjore Palace is right next door and the Brideshwara Temple just few steps away.
Getting there Fly to Chennai International Airport, followed by a domestic flight to Trichy or Madurai and then a 2- 3 hour drive. More suited to part of a wider itinerary.
When to go The best time to visit Thanjavur is between October and March when the weather is cool and conducive for sightseeing and other activities. The summer months of April and May are hot and dry and the heat becomes unbearable during the day. The month of June marks the starting of monsoon that continues till September. Though the temperatures fall slightly, the humidity remains.
