Azerbaijan Tours & Holidays

Small Group Tours & Tailor-Made Holidays

A country where ancient fire temples stand in the shadow of futuristic towers, Azerbaijan is one of the Caucasus' most compelling and least understood destinations. Straddling the crossroads of Europe and Asia, this former Soviet republic surprises at every turn — with a UNESCO-listed medieval old city, extraordinary mud volcanoes, and a landscape as diverse as any in the region.

Beyond the drama of Baku, Azerbaijan unfolds into a country of remarkable contrasts — from the lush subtropical forests of the Talysh Mountains in the south to the high alpine meadows of the Greater Caucasus in the north. Ancient Silk Road caravanserais, remote highland villages and the surreal moonscape of the Gobustan plateau reveal a destination of genuine depth and complexity.

At Asian Geographical, our Caucasus specialists craft tailor-made Azerbaijan holidays and small group tours that go well beyond Baku's famous Flame Towers. Whether exploring Azerbaijan independently or combining it with Georgia and Armenia on a wider Caucasus journey, we ensure every itinerary captures the true character of this fascinating and fast-evolving destination.

Azerbaijan Highlights

BAKU OLD CITY HERITAGE: A UNESCOWorld Heritage Site at the heart of a gleaming modern capital, Baku's Icheri Sheher is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, medieval caravanserais and ancient mosques encircled by 12th-century ramparts. The iconic Maiden Tower rises from its centre, offering sweeping views over the Caspian Sea — a juxtaposition of ancient and ultra-modern that defines contemporary Azerbaijan.

AZERBAIJAN FIRE TEMPLES: Azerbaijan's ancient identity as the Land of Fire is writ large at Ateshgah — a remarkable fire temple near Baku where naturally occurring gas flames have burned for centuries, drawing Zoroastrian, Hindu and Sikh pilgrims from across Asia. Nearby Yanar Dag, a hillside that burns continuously from escaping natural gas, adds another dimension to this extraordinary elemental landscape.

AZERBAIJAN SILK ROAD HERITAGE: The ancient Silk Road left an indelible mark on Azerbaijan, and nowhere is this more evident than in Sheki — a beautifully preserved town whose celebrated Khan's Palace is adorned with breathtaking shebeke stained glass windows. Ancient caravanserais, hilltop fortresses and the coppersmithing village of Lahij complete a Silk Road itinerary of rare authenticity and historical resonance.

AZERBAIJAN LANDSCAPES AND NATURE: From the otherworldly mud volcanoes and prehistoric rock art of Gobustan to the alpine meadows of the Greater Caucasus and the subtropical forests of the Talysh Mountains, Azerbaijan's natural landscapes are extraordinarily diverse. The country contains nine of the world's eleven climate zones — a fact that surprises most visitors and reveals a depth far beyond its gleaming Caspian capital.

Why Choose Asian Geographical
Why Choose Asian Geographical

Exclusively Asia

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Azerbaijan Regions

BAKU AND THE ABSHERON PENINSULA: Azerbaijan's capital is one of the most striking cities in the former Soviet Union — a place where the medieval Icheri Sheher old city sits alongside the extraordinary Flame Towers and a sweeping Caspian promenade. The wider Absheron Peninsula offers the Ateshgah Fire Temple, the burning hillside of Yanar Dag and the ancient Mardakan castle complex all within easy reach of the city.

GOBUSTAN AND THE SOUTHERN LOWLANDS: South of Baku, the landscape shifts dramatically — from the prehistoric rock engravings and bubbling mud volcanoes of Gobustan National Park to the lush, subtropical Talysh Mountains near the Iranian border. The Lankaran region offers dense forests, ancient Zoroastrian villages and a distinctly different cuisine from the north, making it one of Azerbaijan's most rewarding and least-visited areas.

SHEKI AND THE GREATER CAUCASUS: The road north from Baku towards the Greater Caucasus passes through forests, ancient fortresses and traditional highland villages before reaching Sheki — arguably Azerbaijan's most beautiful town. Beyond lie the remote artisan village of Lahij, famous for its hand-beaten copperware, and the alpine community of Ilisu, gateway to some of the finest mountain trekking in the entire Caucasus.

KARABAKH AND NAKHCHIVAN: Azerbaijan's most historically layered regions offer some of its most intriguing travel experiences. The Nakhchivan exclave — bordered by Turkey, Iran and Armenia — shelters the exquisite Momine Khatun Mausoleum and ancient salt caves. The Karabakh region, now gradually reopening to visitors, reveals dramatic highland scenery and a profound, complex history that continues to define the Azerbaijani national story.

WEATHER IN Azerbaijan

The best time to visit Azerbaijan is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild, and you can enjoy festivals, outdoor activities, and cultural events.

  • Azerbaijan, nestled in the South Caucasus, exhibits a rich tapestry of weather conditions owing to its diverse landscapes. Divided into distinct climatic regions, the country offers a varied experience to its inhabitants and visitors alike.
  • The Caspian coastline enjoys a moderate, humid climate, courtesy of the Caspian Sea's influence. Winters are mild, with temperatures seldom dipping below freezing, while summers are characterised by warmth and humidity. The western coastal areas witness substantial rainfall, contributing to the region's lush greenery.
  • In the mountainous regions, such as the Greater Caucasus range, cooler temperatures prevail, accompanied by heavy snowfall during winter. Summers provide respite from the heat of the lowlands, with pleasantly cool weather. However, these areas are prone to thunderstorms and gusty winds, particularly in spring and autumn.
  • Contrastingly, the inland plains, encompassing central and eastern Azerbaijan, experience a more continental climate. Winters are cold, often accompanied by snow, while summers are warm to hot, albeit with lower humidity compared to the coast. Rainfall is less abundant here, resulting in semi-arid conditions in some parts.
  • In essence, Azerbaijan's weather varies widely across its regions, offering a diverse climate that caters to different preferences and activities throughout the year.
