Small Group Tours & Tailor-Made Holidays
The tiny Sultanate of Brunei — nestled on the northwestern coast of Borneo between the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah — is one of Southeast Asia's most intriguing and least-visited destinations. Wealthy beyond measure from its oil reserves yet retaining a culture of deep Islamic tradition and extraordinary natural richness, Brunei offers a window into a world of absolute monarchy, golden-domed mosques and ancient Bornean rainforest that is quite unlike anything else in the region.
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei's compact capital, is a city of remarkable contrasts — where the gilded Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque reflects in its artificial lagoon beside the stilted water village of Kampong Ayer, home to 30,000 people and a way of life unchanged for centuries. Beyond the capital, Brunei's forests — some of the last remaining primary rainforest in Borneo — harbour orang-utans, proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants in the Ulu Temburong National Park, a wilderness of extraordinary biodiversity and beauty.
At Asian Geographical, we incorporate Brunei into tailor-made Borneo itineraries and small group tours that combine its unique cultural character with the wider wildlife riches of Malaysian Sabah and Sarawak. From a dawn visit to the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and an evening boat through the firefly-lit mangroves to a night walk in the Ulu Temburong primary forest, Brunei delivers experiences of genuine distinction and surprise that most travellers to Borneo overlook entirely.
Best of Borneo
OMAR ALI SAIFUDDIEN MOSQUE BRUNEI: The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan is one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in Southeast Asia — a marble-and-gold confection of domes, minarets and a ceremonial stone boat on an artificial lagoon that glows at dusk with an almost supernatural luminosity. Named after Brunei's 28th Sultan and completed in 1958, it remains a potent symbol of the sultanate's Islamic identity and extraordinary oil-funded wealth, and is simply unmissable for any visitor to Brunei.
KAMPONG AYER WATER VILLAGE BRUNEI: Straddling the Brunei River in the heart of the capital, Kampong Ayer is the world's largest water village — a remarkable community of some 30,000 people living in wooden stilt houses connected by over 36 kilometres of wooden boardwalks. Once called the Venice of the East by Magellan's chroniclers, this extraordinary floating settlement has its own schools, mosques, fire stations and clinics, and an exploration by water taxi through its lanes and channels is one of the most memorable experiences Brunei has to offer.
ULU TEMBURONG RAINFOREST BRUNEI: The Ulu Temburong National Park in Brunei's exclave of Temburong — accessible by a thrilling longboat journey through mangrove channels — protects some of the most pristine primary rainforest in all of Borneo, a cathedral of ancient trees and extraordinary biodiversity largely untouched by human activity. The forest canopy walkway at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre offers extraordinary perspectives on this ancient ecosystem, and night walks reveal a nocturnal world of extraordinary richness and strangeness.
BRUNEI ROYAL HERITAGE AND CULTURE: Brunei's absolute monarchy — the same family has ruled since the 15th century — has created a culture of unique character and considerable fascination. The Royal Regalia Museum houses an extraordinary collection of ceremonial objects, royal chariots and coronation regalia of the current Sultan, the world's longest-reigning monarch. The Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, with its 29 golden domes, and the vast Istana Nurul Iman palace — the world's largest residential palace — complete a picture of sultanate splendour unlike anything in Southeast Asia.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN AND THE CAPITAL DISTRICT: Brunei's compact and immaculately maintained capital is the starting point for any Brunei visit — a city of golden mosques, royal museums and the extraordinary water village of Kampong Ayer, all within easy walking distance of one another. The Arts and Handicrafts Centre showcases traditional Bruneian craft skills, the Brunei Museum traces the sultanate's history and Islamic heritage, and the Tasek Lama Recreational Park offers pleasant jungle walks just minutes from the city centre.
TEMBURONG AND THE PRIMARY RAINFOREST: Brunei's eastern Temburong district — an exclave separated from the main sultanate by the Malaysian Limbang district — is accessible by a dramatic longboat journey through mangrove waterways and contains the Ulu Temburong National Park, one of the most pristine areas of primary rainforest remaining in Borneo. The park's canopy walkway, night walks and river swimming in crystal-clear forest streams offer encounters with an ancient ecosystem of extraordinary biodiversity and primeval beauty.
TUTONG AND THE INTERIOR: The Tutong district of central Brunei offers a quieter, more rural face of the sultanate — a landscape of rice paddies, river communities and traditional Malay villages little touched by the oil wealth of the capital. The Sungai Basong wetlands provide excellent birdwatching, while the Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park — Brunei's largest lake and an ASEAN heritage site — shelters freshwater wildlife and indigenous Dusun community traditions of considerable cultural interest.
BELAIT AND THE OIL HERITAGE: The Belait district in western Brunei is the heartland of the sultanate's extraordinary oil industry — the source of the wealth that has transformed this tiny nation into one of the richest per-capita states in the world. The Oil and Gas Discovery Centre in Seria provides a fascinating introduction to Brunei's petroleum heritage, while the Luagan Lalak Recreational Park's freshwater swamp forest and the Rasau mangrove forest near Kuala Belait offer rewarding natural escapes from the industrial landscape.
