Interesting sites include the elegant 18th-century monuments of Asafi Imambara that features labyrinth-like corridors and the nearby Rumi Darwaza, a 60-foot-high said to be a replica of an archway in Istanbul.

Location On the banks of the river Gomti, right in the heart of Lucknow's business and entertainment areas, in Uttar Pradesh's capital city.

Getting there Fly to Mumbai Chattrapathi Shivaji Airport, followed by a 1-hour domestic flight. Gomti Nagar is just 8 km from the railway terminus and a mere 20 km from the airport.

When to go The best time to travel to India is between September and March, when the weather is most pleasant. Summer starts in April and by June, it becomes very hot. By July there is the south-west monsoon, which brings heavy rains to the west coast. Although the word "monsoon" often brings to mind images of torrential floods and landslides, it is not a bad time to travel. The downpour tends to come and go quickly, leaving behind a clean, glistening landscape.
