Tranquil is an authentic plantation homestay, set in a 400-acre coffee and vanilla plantation estate, near Wayanad in northern Kerala. Built in the 1930s, the original bungalow has been spruced up to provide a comfortable stay with modern facilities, yet keeping the ambience of a plantation retreat. Guests are welcomed by the hosts; plantation director Ajay Mathulla and his wife Nisha and their friendly dogs who provide much love and affection that will help lower your blood pressure.
Nestled within the tropical forest, Tranquil resort has just 10 rooms. The original plantation bungalow holds five comfortable Garden Suites with a lounge, an enormous Deluxe Room and the Luxury Suite which has its own private garden. There is also a separate 2-bedroom cottage, with a large living area, veranda and private garden and two tree-houses set at 10-meters off the ground. Home cooked delicious meals are served in a communal table on the terrace with forest views.
There are a variety of activities on offer at the Tranquil resort including the plantation tour where you learn about how coffee and vanilla are grown and dried (available December-March). There are also a number of well-marked walking trails which are great for birdwatchers. In the surrounds is the Muthanga Game Sanctuary and Eddakal Caves with paintings dating back to 3000 BC. Back at the resort is a relaxing pool, a Jacuzzi, and services of an Ayurvedic massage and treatments.
Amenities
Stay Tranquil Resort comprises of 10 rooms and suites. These are offered in two Colonial style planter’s bungalows and two tree-houses set at 10-meters off the ground. The standard rooms are large, and offer modern amenities. Each feature gorgeous wooden floors, gleaming original woodwork, tiled floors, comfortable beds and spacious modern bathrooms. Suites have their own private garden but for the ultimate in peace and tranquillity book yourself into one of the Tree villas.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Tranquil Resort. There is a 2-bedroom Catimor Cottage, with a large living area, veranda and private garden, which is ideal for two couples or a family. Alternatively, families with older children can book the larger Tree Villa with one double and two daybeds, two bathrooms and a large terrace overlooking the plantation.
Dine Meals at the Tranquil resort is mainly homemade and are on full-board basis. The ever-changing menu is a mix of continental fare, regional Indian favourites, traditional Kerala cuisine and “grandmother’s” secret recipes. Meals are served on a communal table on the terrace, beautifully laid with crisp linen and hibiscus or jasmine flowers and prepared with fresh locally sourced ingredients. Everything is homemade, including the pickles and there is plenty to eat.
Relax The keywords at the Tranquil resort are nature and relaxation, both of which are found in abundance. There is a tranquil swimming pool and a Jacuzzi, overlooking the forest or you can take a siesta on the Treedeck overlooking the gardens. For ultimate relaxation, there is Ayurvedic massage and treatments provided by a qualified practitioner and a platform for yoga and meditation.
Experience There are 13 excellently signposted walks on offer at the Tranquil resort. Birdwatchers can have a field day with over 127 species identified here. Nearby, the Eddakal Caves is home to 5,000-year-old etchings and at the Muthanga Game Sanctuary, you can spot elephants, leopards, bison, bears, peacocks and even the elusive tiger. Further afield is Sultan's Battery, a former stronghold of the Tippu sultan, and a bustling market with a 9th-century Jain Temple.

Getting there Fly to Bangalore International Airport (10-hours), from where it's a 5.5-hour drive via Mysore to Tranquil.
When to go Isolated from much of India by the Western Ghats, the climate of Kerala & Karnataka is tropical. The best time to visit is from January through to April. Summer is hot and humid; the monsoon season arrives in early June and lasts till August. While September can be dry and humid. There can be a little rain in October and November, cooling off around December and lasting until February.
