History lovers can uncover the mysteries of Tamgaly’s ancient petroglyphs, explore the Silk Road city of Turkestan, or visit Baikonur Cosmodrome, the launch site of space exploration.

WEATHER IN Kazakhstan

The best time to visit Kazakhstan is from May to June and September to October, offering pleasant weather for outdoor activities and avoiding the extreme heat of summer and severe winter cold.

  • Kazakhstan experiences a sharply continental climate, with stark contrasts between seasons and substantial variation across regions. The vastness of the country, the world's ninth-largest, means that the weather can differ significantly from area to area.
  • In the north, where cities like Astana are located, winters are long and bitterly cold, with temperatures frequently plummeting below -20°c, and sometimes reaching as low as -40°c. Snow cover is persistent and deep, lasting from November to late April. Summers, though brief, can be quite warm, with July temperatures averaging around 20°c.
  • Contrastingly, the southern regions, including Almaty, enjoy milder winters, where temperatures rarely fall below -10°c, and significantly hotter summers, with temperatures often exceeding 30°c. This area also experiences more precipitation, particularly in the mountainous regions around Almaty, which are popular for hiking and skiing.
  • The western and central parts of Kazakhstan are characterised by arid and semi-arid climates, with extremely hot summers and cold winters, while the Caspian Sea coast experiences milder weather, with less extreme temperatures due to the moderating influence of the sea.
  • The best time to visit Kazakhstan largely depends on your intended activities. For trekking and exploring the mountains, late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the most favourable weather conditions. These periods avoid the summer heat and the harsh winter cold, while still providing enough daylight. Winter sports enthusiasts should consider visiting from December to February when the snow is plentiful.
