The Manor Hotel: Boutique Luxury in New Delhi

The Manor is a small contemporary hotel, set in the high-end, tree-lined gated residential area of Friend’s Colony in South Delhi. Built in the 1950s in colonial style and surrounded by delightful landscaped gardens, it offers a quiet retreat from the bustling heart of the city. The interiors were designed by London-based Shirley Fujikawa and consequently the look is not remotely Indian. The décor is slick and sharp, with terrazzo floors, cherry wood panelling and upholstered furniture.

Housed within the white painted, colonial style house, The Manor has just 14 rooms in four sizes and one suite. All the rooms are tastefully designed with high ceilings with caramel and beige hues; the better ones have a small private terrace or open out on to the garden. Ensuite green granite bathrooms have double vanity sinks and both a shower and bath. Although aimed at the business market, the hotel does not have a corporate feel because of the personal style of service.

The Manor offers a range of ‘Old World Experiences’ programmes such as walking tours that unfold tales of Old Delhi going back hundreds of years. Shop-a-holics can take the ‘Shop and Dine’ tour to the 'thieves market' with a stop for authentic Indian cuisine in a unique atmosphere. There are several state handicraft emporia near Janpath and the famous Central Cottage Industries in Connaught Place. Sightseeing tours include Moghul architecture in old Delhi and Lutyens New Delhi.

When to go The best time to travel to India is between September and March, when the weather is most pleasant. Summer starts in April and by June, it becomes very hot. By July there is the south-west monsoon, which brings heavy rains to the west coast. Although the word "monsoon" often brings to mind images of torrential floods and landslides, it is not a bad time to travel. The downpour tends to come and go quickly, leaving behind a clean, glistening landscape.
