Kumarakom Lake Resort: Luxury Backwater Retreat in Kerala

The Kumarakom Lake Resort is located on the banks of the Lake Vembanad in Kerala. It is a re-creation of an ancient Kerala village, with materials sourced from 16th-century ancestral homes purchased throughout Kerala. Surrounded by mangroves, paddy fields and pepper trees, the Kumarakom Lake Resort’s 39 villas beside a winding pool, are a careful reconstruction of ‘Mana’, a 16th-century heritage home. Each duplex Meandering Pool Villas possess direct access to the pool from its very own bathing cove and private sit-outs. Heritage Villas, built in the style of the traditional homestead of Kerala, has its own private courtyard with a private pool and Jacuzzi. These come with either garden or lake view. 

Dining options at the Kumarakom Lake Resort include Ettukettu, serving an array of both local and international cuisine, Vembanad, specialises in seafood cuisine and Thattukada café serves teas and snacks. For Kerala’s backwater experience, opt for an overnight stay in one of Kumarakom’s houseboats, offering guests a romantic private cruise in utter elegance. Alternatively, chill out by the infinity pool on the banks of the lake with a poolside pavilion to enjoy a cool drink.

Stay Kumarakom Lake Resort has 39 rooms and villas. Luxury Pavilion Rooms nestle amidst the lush foliage behind the resort. Meandering Pool Villas and duplex villas, are set along the 250-m long pool and have their own bathing cove and sit-outs. All rooms and villas are designed in the traditional style with modern luxuries with a Jacuzzi. Kumarakom Houseboats are traditional kettuvalloms or houseboats, to explore Lake Vembanad, and experience life along the backwaters of Kerala. 


ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at the Kumarakom Lake Resort but there are no specific facilities available for them. Babysitting can be arranged upon request.


Dine Dining at Kumarakom Lake Resort is mainly at the Ettukettu, the multi-cuisine restaurant. Set in a princely mansion, it reflects the grandeur of yesteryear Kerala’s regal architecture. Like all coastal towns and cities, a seafood bar, Vembanad is the favourite. Thattukada is a traditional teashop recreated at Kumarakom in its original, rustic splendour and is an inviting place to start a conversation. The Pool pavilion is set on the banks of the lake by the infinity pool serves light meals and exquisite dining.


Relax Facilities at the Kumarakom Resort include Ayurmana Spa, offering ancient Ayurveda therapies combined with yoga and meditation sessions held in the resort’s gardens. Special packages range between 7-21 days for rejuvenation, de-stress, weight reduction and beauty care. For relaxation, there is a large, tranquil pool with an equally inviting Jacuzzi. The well-equipped Fitness Centre has modern fitness equipment, overseen by professional instructors. 


Experience Kumarakom Resort offers many activities on the lake and an on land. The Backwater cruise is the most popular but other activities include Sunset cruise, Water sports including water skiing, speedboat and banana boat rides, etc. In addition, you can visit the Bird Sanctuary or take a sightseeing trip to Kottayam. You can also go cycling, village walks, play billiards, try a hand at fishing or enjoy evening shows of Kerala's traditional dance drama and music.
 


 

Location Kumarakom Lake resort is located in the village of Kumarakom, on the banks of lake Vembanad. Tucked peacefully away on the idyllic island of Kumarakom, this heritage retreat is a perfect base from which to explore Kerala’s backwaters and rich birdlife.


Getting There The nearest Airport to Kumarakom is the Cochin International Airport, about 70 km away from the Muhamma boat jetty. The second nearest airport is at Trivandrum, 171 km away. Alternatively, it is connected to other areas in India by train and main highways.


When to go The best time to travel to Kerala is between November and March when temperatures are ideal for the beach and backwaters, while the hills offer a cooler alternative. Summer is hot and humid. June brings in the monsoon season that lasts up to mid-August but it's supposed to be the best time for ayurvedic treatments. During August and September, the temperatures are cooler and it is time for Onam festival. There can be a little rain in the night in October and November.
