Jamtara Wilderness Camp: Luxury Safari Camp in India

Jamtara Wilderness is a luxury tented camp, located adjacent to Pench National Park in Central India. Surrounded by forests of broadleaf teak, flame of the forest and ghostly, bone-white kulu trees, the camp provides a perfect retreat from which to take a walking safari in the surrounding park's buffer zone, in search of a tiger or leopard sighting. While these are now-a-days random, staying at Jamtara does guarantee a great Indian safari experience between game drives.

There are just 10 African style tents at Jamtara Wilderness Camp. All are set on wooden platform, are spacious in size and luxurious in furnishing. Attached bathrooms are equally large with modern fittings, power shower and quality amenities. Private sitting areas overlook the riverbed that attracts a wide variety of wildlife, perfect for a drink after game drives. The main building has a lounge with comfy sofas and a dining area furnished with a mix of colonial and art deco pieces.

Guests staying at Jamtara Wilnerness Camp enjoy two daily safaris in Pench National Park. The morning safari begins early during which you are likely to see chital, sambar, nilgai and sloth bear. There are also four-horned antelope and barking deer, as well as Indian leopard and tiger. Other activities include village walks or cycling tours through the countryside. One night, you can opt to sleep out under the stars, set on a high platform or Machhan in a local farm.

Stay Jamtara Wilderness Camp offers just ten luxury tents in a forest surrounded by tall Arjuna Trees. All are set on polished wooden platforms and furnished with double beds, colourful handmade rugs, large wooden table and an open veranda with chairs to watch the wildlife. The three-layered tents are spacious in size and have ensuite bathrooms with modern facilities including air-conditioning. Netted side walls ensure the rooms is fly and mosquito free, but these can be rolled up if desired. 

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Jamtara Wilderness Camp though there will be age limits on activities. However there are loads of activities suitable for children including village walks, cycling around the lodge and forest. There is also a swimming pool. All tents can accommodate and an extra bed. Please note, safari destinations are better for grown up children.

Dine Guests staying at Jamtara Wilderness Camp can choose between a jungle plan or an all-inclusive Plan for their board basis. The recommended all-inclusive plan includes all meals and refreshments, game drives, nature walks and cookery classes. Breakfast is generally packed as game drives leave early in the morning. Lunch is European style with soups and salads and dinner is served candle lit in the dining room and is consistently of high standard and includes regional fare.

Relax The main area of the Jamtara Wilderness Camp is a large open-sided room with a long dining table, leather sofas and chairs and a selection of reading material. There is a firepit by a huge banyan tree, a preferred spot for sundowners. There is also plenty of outside space for al fresco meals an outdoor swimming pool is a perfect spot to cool off during the afternoon.

Experience There are daily two game drives in Pench National Park offered by expert guides of the Jamtara Wildnerness Camp. Since the park is unfenced the wildlife viewing is equally good around the lodge. A visit to the local Jamtara village, is a great way to witness daily life in this remote part of the country and you are always be assured of a warm welcome. The lodge can arrange an overnight stay in a star bed, set up on a high platform, complete with basic bathroom amenities.
 


 

Location Jamtara Wilderness is located close to the Jamtara Gate, the quieter end of Pench National Park.

Getting there Fly to Nagpur followed by a 2-hour drive.

When to go Tropical climate- hot during the day. Summer (April-June) temperatures can get as high as 43-44°C, while early mornings and evenings are pleasant (18-24°C). Night time winter temperatures vary between 02-20°C, whereas days are sunny and pleasant (October-March). Rainfall is heavy in the monsoon season (mid-June to September) and average rainfall is 1400 mm. The best time to travel is October to May when game viewing is at its best.
