Leopard Trails is a luxury safari camp, set on the edge of Yala National Park, on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast. Yala National Park consists of scrub jungle, lakes, and riverine habitats, and it has become known as one of the best wildlife parks to view leopards. The Leopard Trails camp, set in Kochchipathana village bordering the Yala Park, offers travellers the best chance to stay close to the action and can almost guarantee a sighting of this elusive animal.
The accommodation at the Leopard Trails is made up of spacious waterproof tents each with en-suite bathrooms. All tents are air-conditioned and have queen size hard beds draped in fine linen, classic teak furniture and ensuite bathrooms with modern facilities. There are also two Luxury Tents which benefit from more space and an indoor shower with solar powered hot water. For families, three basic tents can be joined together.
A typical day with Leopard Trails includes two game drives into the Yala National Park. Designed especially for photographers and comfort, in either a Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Hilux, the game drives are led by Game Rangers who have years of experience. Back at the camp, guests can enjoy a private alfresco shower, followed by drinks and appetizers around the camp fire. The camp operates on an all-inclusive basis including two game drives per day, all meals and drinks.
Stay Leopard Trails offers just eight spacious tents including two luxurious tents. All are spacious and decorated in Edwardian-glam with Queen-sized beds draped in Egyptian-cotton sheets, classic teak safari furniture, sofas and writing tables. Ensuite bathrooms have modern facilities and a private veranda with camping furniture. The two luxurious tents are larger with wooden double-doors, air-conditioning and bathrooms with tempered glass shower cubicle with solar powered hot water.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Leopard Trails. Young explorers can join the Mini Ranger Course which takes place during game drives and around the camp. It includes short walks, tracking animals, a cosmic star safari, learning bush survival techniques and game-spotting competitions. On completion of the course, these proud achievers are awarded certificates to recognise their new-found knowledge and accomplishments.
Dine There is a communal lounge tent at the Leopard Trails Camp, furnished with sofas and comfy lounge chairs. It also hosts the dining area, lounge, bar and a small library. Drinks are served around a campfire by the lakeside and meals are arranged under a starlit sky. All meals are included in guests stays, and include both Sri Lankan and Western dishes, created from locally grown vegetables, and locally sourced meat and fish.
Relax The main activity at the Leopard Trails is spotting wildlife. In between, guests can choose to cool off in a hammock or laze in the main lounge on comfortable sofas with a book from the camp’s small library of books on wildlife. Alternatively, you can take a leisurely stroll in the surrounds with a resident guide to explore the local flora and fauna.
Experience Yala National Park is said to have the highest leopard concentration in the world. Guests at the Leopard Trails are well placed to see this elusive animal with some of the best safari guides in the region, who have been trained in Sri Lanka, the UK, Australia and South Africa. Other wildlife in the park include elephants and crocodiles, as well as hundreds of bird species. With a limit of up to 6 clients per safari vehicle, you will have a personal and authentic safari experience.

Location Leopard Trails is located in the buffer zone bordering Yala National Park in the south of Sri Lanka. The nearest entrance to the park is Katagamuwa.
Getting there Fly into Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport. From there Leopard Trails, Yala is a 5-hour drive. Guests are met by the Leopard Trails team at a nearby location, transferred into their four-wheel vehicle and driven on a rustic track to the site, which is about 7km from the Katagamuwa entrance to Yala National Park.
When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
