Jetwing Vil Uyana sits on its own man-made eco-reserve which boasts a wetland, secondary monsoon forests and paddy lands. What was formerly a barren patch of land has now emerged into a nature lover's paradise with more than a hundred varieties of wildlife inhabiting the area. Amongst one of the eco-friendliest hotels in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka the Jetwing Vil Uyana is surrounded by nature on all sides with an environment full of animals and birds that live there.
The 36 thatched roof villas at Jetwing Vil Uyana, are either on water, paddy fields or in the forest. Our forest dwelling villa overlay the lake. The sitting room on the ground floor opens onto a huge bathing courtyard which consists two vanities, outdoor shower, sunken bath, fish pond and sitting pavilion. The spacious ensuite bedroom is on the upper floor with 2 balconies overlooking our private pool and sundeck for watching wildlife and gorgeous sunsets.
The enhanced biodiversity of the environs around Jetwing Vil Uyana, enables the hotel to conduct wildlife watching tours on the premises itself, which means you only have to step out of your room to experience the local wildlife. You can also take walking and biking tours in the surrounds but don’t miss the interesting Loris watching tour conducted by the hotel staff at night. Jetwing can also arrange cultural tours to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.

Experience The beauty of this place is exclusiveness. Obviously, this means Vil Uyana is in the middle of nowhere but this isn't a problem as UNESCO-listed Dambula, Sigiriya Rock and Anuradhapura are within easy reach. Or take an elephant ride and Safari in Minneriya National Park. There is a resident naturalist available to take you round if you would like. We saw two marsh crocodiles, a 4ft water monitor attacking and eating a snake, peacocks, countless birds and butterflies.

When to go The best time to visit Sri Lanka is between December and April when it’s drier and the climate is cooler. It’s also the peak time for whale-watching in the south where blue and sperm whales can be seen. From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern coast and the cultural triangle. However, the hill country around Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains and Bandarawela remains cooler. Rains may also occur between September and November.
