Amanwella

Amanwella Resort in Tangalle lies above the golden sand beach at Amanwella, in a cove on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Sweeping vistas of the beach, (one of the most beautiful) lined with coconut palms and crashing waves, makes this a stunning location. Those who have not visited other Amans may be surprised by the minimalistic architecture which reaches its apogee in the reception area where your Amanwella experience starts with a "check-in" without a reception desk.

Amanwella has only around 30 villas, all with private splash pool and glassed inner walls that can be covered if you wish and a long terrace. The sleeping and living room are combined to provide an inviting space. These are furnished with a king size bed, dark-wood writing desk, cosy armchair and a credenza with a personal bar. Sliding screens divide the bedrooms from generous bathrooms, with a free-standing bathtub, twin vanities, dressing area.

Meals at the Amanwella Resort are mostly at the immaculate split-level restaurant overlooking the pool and ocean, or alfresco anywhere of your choosing. Meals are made to order but the Chef is passionate about serving Asian and Mediterranean cuisine with an emphasis on local seafood from the Indian Ocean. Amanwella’s 47-metre long infinity pool boasts breath-taking views of the sea and there are two spa suites high on the hillside.

Stay Amanwella Resort, Tangalle has just 30 villas. Situated higher up the hill its spacious Suites feature 6m plunge pools in private courtyards and expansive terraces. The Ocean Suites, also with plunge pools and terrazzo floors are located on the lower levels of the hill. Most suites are free-standing, although four sets of suites share a connecting door on the terrace offering uninterrupted views of the sea, beach and coconut grove.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at the Amanwella Resort, Tangalle. There are four sets of suites share a connecting door on the terrace, that are ideal for families. Babysitting services can be arranged, if requested.

Dine At the Amanwella Resort, the reality of ‘feel like home’ really sinks in when you decide to eat.  The chef will talk to you on arrival and ask what you enjoy eating, and then plan out the menu for the duration of your stay. The Amanwella Restaurant serves up the catch of the day, delivered fresh from the local fishermen’s boats. Locally-grown produce also features prominently on the menu at both at the Restaurant and Beach Club.

Relax Spa treatments can be organised inside the Amanwella Suites or at isolated spots beside the seaside or jungle. The all-natural products are made with ingredients from Sri Lanka’s cornucopia of herbs, plants and flowers. There is a swimming pool near the coconut grove, where your sun beds are always ready with an extra towel, and iced water to hand.

Experience Days take an idle pattern at Amanwella Resort - breakfast is on the restaurant terrace. Later take a walk down the beach and swimming in the sea. The waves are big and the beach falls away very steeply, but with the help of the beach boys, who tell you when to launch, it is a wonderful experience. Return to the hotel’s swimming pool for the last swim. Finally, evenings at the library and the elegant open bar cum lounge before dinner at the main restaurant or at the villa balcony.

One More Thing The trouble at the Amanwella Resort is that when everything is perfect; you take it as a challenge upon yourself to find mistakes. But as one traveller said, “...what set Amanwella apart for us is not tangible and is hard to describe; it is simply the sum of the parts; the hospitality of the people and the overwhelming feeling of being looked after.” The truth is that Amanwella manages it perfectly to make us feel invited and once there we ‘feel like being at home’.

Location Amanwella is a tranquil hideaway set in a coconut grove above a palm strewn tropical beach on Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast near Tangalle.

Getting There There are direct (10-hour 45-minute) flights to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Colombo. The car transfer from BIA to Amanwella takes about 4-hours 30-minutes. Alternatively, Sri Lankan Airlines runs a daily Airtaxi service from BIA to Dickwella airstrip, a 15-minute drive from Amanwella. Helicopter transfers are also avaliable from BIA.

When to go The best time to visit Sri Lanka is between December and April when it’s drier and the climate is cooler. It’s also the peak time for whale-watching in the south where blue and sperm whales can be seen. From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern coast and the cultural triangle. However, the hill country around Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains and Bandarawela remains cooler. Rains may also occur between September and November.
