Stone House Kandy, Hill Country | Luxury Resort in Sri Lanka | Asian Geographical Adventures

Stone House is a private boutique villa, set on a hillock in Nittawala, a residential suburb of Kandy in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country. Built around the 1940s, this colonial mansion was in the olden days referred to as ‘Gal Bangalawa’, which aptly translates to a house built of stone. Set in a very private location in a residential suburb not far from the centre of Kandy, it serves as a perfect retreat from which to explore the many attractions in and around Kandy.

Set on lush verdant land of terraced gardens, Stone House features just five-bedrooms. All are spacious in size and are individually decorated in traditional Kandyan heritage with contemporary style. Spread over two floors, each room enjoys a private terrace or balcony to take in the glorious mountain views. The inhouse restaurant serves a fusion of Western and Sri Lankan cuisine in the dining hall or al fresco in the gardens, prepared with locally sourced fresh ingredients.

Guests at the Stone House, mostly occupy their day visiting the historical sites in Kandy. A great way to get a feel for Sri Lanka’s ancient culture is by visiting temples such as Gadaladeniya Viharaya, Ambakke Devale and Lankathilaka Temple, all of which are masterpieces of Sri Lankan architecture. Back at the Stone House is a lovely infinity pool surrounded by a large garden. Spa treatments can be arranged, and there are also mountain bikes available for exploring the city.

Location Stone House is set on a hillock in Nittawala, a residential suburb of Kandy in the Hill Country. It is a 15-minute drive from Kandy itself, and from the Temple of the Tooth.

Getting there Fly to Colombo, followed by a 3.5-hour drive to the hotel.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. However, it barely gets unbearably hot in the Hill Country. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, when days are warm (around 28C) with cool nights. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here when there’s almost no rain at all.
