Samudra Beach House: Exclusive Beachfront Villa in Sri Lanka

Samudra House is a small and charming villa, set on the Koggala Beach, southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Designed by one of Sri Lanka's premier architects, Jayatillaka Sumangala, the villa is newly built and yet you will see aged Dutch tiles, squat veranda columns and recycled timber door frames that reminisces Sri Lanka’s golden era. Situated on a wide, mile-long beach near Kogalla, home to marine turtles, this is an incredible generous escape for a family or two couples.

Set within walled gardens, Samudra House has just two spacious bedrooms with a wraparound veranda, fronting a swimming pool, and the sea beyond. Interiors are furnished with antique style king-size four-poster beds, huge wardrobes, study tables and lounge chairs to enjoy the visiting birdlife. There is a large living area, open plan kitchen and outdoor dining pavilion, as well as an inviting infinity pool overlooking the sea.

Guests at Samudra House begin their day walking on the beach, sometimes volunteering to help out the turtles reach safely to the sea. The villa comes fully staffed with a chef, so you can eat what you want and when you want it. For daily errands, there is a houseman, night watchman and a laundry lady. The staff will also organise your day trips to Galle, where you may spend a day, exploring the Galle Fort, or take a half-day excursion to see the whales.

All rooms are air-conditioned and lookout towards the ocean.

Dine Dining at Samudra House is flexible and guests can decide to eat when and where they like. You can choose to eat out in Galle Fort or at one of the nearby restaurants, or dine in and enjoy the comfort of your villa. There is a team of dedicated staff including a chef who will liaise with you about your choice and will buy the ingredients for your meals based on your likes and dislikes. You can choose to cook yourself, or let the chef cook up a mix of Western and Sri Lankan dishes.

Relax Facilities at the Samudra House includes Infinity pool with sun loungers and surrounded by manicured lawns and coconut palms. The staff at Samudra House can organise for a trained therapist to provide you with a relaxing massage. Guests can walk to the beach, which can be rough but there are places to swim nearby.

Experience The wide sandy Koggala Beach is utilized by several of the marine turtles for laying their eggs. Guests at Samudra House can walk down to the nearby Sea Turtle Farm & Hatchery, where you can see the endangered Hawksbill turtle, amongst others. The coast is also known for its whale watching, which can be seen on half day excursions. For a bit of history, visit the 17th-century Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and take a fascinating tour of the Handunugoda Tea Factory.

Location Samudra House is located in Habaraduwa, just 10km from Galle and close to Koggala Lake. Situated on Koggala Beach, this is one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful coastal spots.

Getting there Fly into Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport. From there Samudra House is a 3-4-hour drive away by private car.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
