Located on the western coast between Colombo and Galle is Aluthgama, near Bentota. Between the sea and Aluthgama, lies Paradise Island, a narrow spit of land beautifully sandwiched between the choppy waters of the Indian Ocean and the calm waters of the Bentota lagoon. The lagoon formed by the tranquil Bentota Ganga that provides the setting for Sri Lanka’s biggest range of watersports, along with interesting boat trips up the river.
On the Paradise Island are some of Sri Lanka’s finest clusters of top-end hotels and villas, set at discreet intervals from one another down the coast. Many of the hotels in the area are the work of local architect Geoffrey Bawa. Club Bentota is one of his classic creations, whose artful combination of nature and artifice offers an experience both luxurious and aesthetic.

Marine Turtle Hatchery The beaches of Sri Lanka are the nesting grounds for five species of marine turtles. They are the Green Turtle, the Leatherback, the Hawksbill, the Loggerhead and the Olive Ridley. All 5 species have been recorded to nest along specific areas of Sri Lanka’s coast. Each of these species have their own nesting grounds. For example Leatherbacks nest at Walawe Modera and Godawaya. Hawksbill nests at Bentota while Green Turtle nests at Rekawa and Kosgoda. Loggerheads nest at Welipatanwala. Olive Ridleys are the only species of turtle that nest everywhere.
There are 18 hatcheries found along the southern coastal line; of them, nine hatcheries are found in the district of Galle and one is found in the district of Hambantota (Darwin's Cabana). According to statistics from 1996 to 1999, nearly a hundred thousand sea turtles were hatched and released to the sea from these hatcheries.
If you want to see turtles visiting the South Western and South Eastern coastal villages you can do this at night from a distance with the aid of binoculars. Nesting turtles should not be disturbed and light disturbances should be minimised at night.
When to go Sri Lanka is a year round destination with a tropical climate. However the best time to go is between December and April when there are less rains and the climate is cooler. It is also the peak time for whale-watching in the south of the island where both blue and sperm whales can be seen. Rains arrive in May and stay until September during which it is hot and humid in the cultural triangle and the west coast. However, the hill country around Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains and Bandarawela remains cooler. June is a good time to visit the eastern port of Trincomalee, where blue and sperm whales are observed closer to land. Try and avoid travelling between September and November when cyclones may occur with heavy rains.
Visa UK Passport holders travelling to Sri Lanka for business or tourist purposes are required to get the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Visa. ETA holders are issued a 30 day short visit visa at the port of entry in Sri Lanka. Upon arrival, you are required to produce your passport to the immigration officer to obtain the necessary clearance. It is advisable that you keep a copy of the ETA approval with you. Passports should have one blank page and be valid for no less than six months from the date of arrival.
