Habaraduwa House: Beachfront Luxury in Sri Lanka

Habaraduwa House is a modern, boutique villa, set in the small village of Habaraduwa, close to Koggala, Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast. Originally built in 2001, Habaraduwa House was purchased in 2011 by an English interior designer George Cooper, who undertook extensive renovations and improvements. Occupying a prime location on the Habaraduwa’s palm-fringed beach, one of the widest in the region, it is now considered to be the best beach villa in Galle.

The Habaraduwa House is designed as a series of stand-alone buildings, comprising of four, impeccably decorated bedrooms that enjoy total privacy. The living room is the hub of the villa, making up the central area complete with beautiful French windows overlooking the pool and garden area. Exquisite meals including candlelight dinners are served in the wonderfully airy pavilion offering an exhilarating experience of dining within the sound of the sea.

Habaraduwa’s palm-fringed beach is one of the widest and prettiest in the region. Guests at Habaraduwa House can take a leisurely stroll along the beach to a beautiful lagoon safe for bathing. Further east, where the beach narrows, you can watch the stilt fishermen. Water sports in the region include water skiing and scuba diving and during season there are whale watching expeditions. Families with children will enjoy turtle watching on the nearby beach.

Dine There is a small team of staff at the Habaraduwa House, with Nuwan, the chef, who presides over a modern, well equipped kitchen in the rear of the main building. Delicious Sri Lankan and western dishes are served in an open sided ambalama in the garden or the place of your own choosing. Guests can discuss their menu with the chef who will create meals with fresh locally sourced ingredients.

Relax The Habaraduwa House consists of a series of stand-alone buildings with a living room or Ambalama which is linked by a full-length terrace that steps out to the pool and garden. There are ample spaces around to relax and a lovely swimming pool surrounded by manicured lawns and sun loungers. Kids have their own games room for the kids and there is a low, woven fencing between the garden and beach that prevents small children from wandering too far.

Experience Habaraduwa is a great destination with long stretch of palm-fringed beaches. Guests at Habaraduwa House are well placed to visit the famed turtle-hatchery and the inland Koggala Lake, which is a haven for wildlife lovers. Galle Fort UNESCO heritage site is just a short 15-minute drive away. Whale Watching expeditions can be enjoyed during the season off the coast of Mirissa and escorted bike ride, water skiing and scuba diving can be easily arranged.

Location Habaraduwa House can be found in the small coastal village of Habaraduwa near to Koggala Beach and the nearby Koggala Lake. Galle is close by, just a short 15-minutes drive away.

Getting there Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is the sole international airport in Sri Lanka and is located about 30km north of the city. The journey time to Habaraduwa House is 4-hours from Colombo. You may also take the seaplane, which lands on Koggala Lake, cutting the journey time to 45-minutes from Colombo.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
