Claughton House is a beach front villa, perched on a hillside outside the town of Tangalle in Southern Sri Lanka. Designed by the country’s most famous architect, Geoffrey Bawa, the villa features his signature verandas, courtyards and open-side pavilions. From the splendour of the property, manicured gardens stretch down to the turquoise infinity pool, providing an intermittent barrier from the beach below. This is an ideal setting in Sri Lanka, for a dose of unadulterated bliss.
Accommodation at the Claughton House comprises of just five suites, spread out in two separated buildings. Three rooms are in the main house and the other two are in separate buildings which can be accessed by a covered walkway. A small team of staff including an expert chef and butler ensure every need is met; cooking, children’s entertainment, safari trips and more. There is a small white sandy beach which is suitable for swimming and snorkelling between December and April.
The concierge at the Claughton House can arrange excursions to Kalametiya bird sanctuary, Yala Safari Park and the beaches around Tengalle. There are popular spots for swimming, surfing and snorkelling in the nearby Medilla Natural Swimming Area and to the east Rekawa Beach, where children will enjoy turtle watching. With so much to do in the surrounds, this is a perfect place for a group of family and friends to enjoy a relaxed holiday in Sri Lanka.

Stay Claughton House has only five suites. all are contemporary in design with plush beds draped in fine linen, concrete polished floors covered with colourful rugs, comfy sofas and ensuite bathrooms with bath. The colour palate is classic white; ceilings and walls with black trimmings, and huge glass-walls evoke a modern, bright and airy ambiance. Some of these rooms come with a private garden and one of the rooms doubles as a TV room, equipped with DVDs.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Claughton house and guests with kids and toddlers will find the villa to be extremely child-friendly. Baby cot and babysitting services/nanny can be arranged upon request. There is also a games room, with an array of DVDs, a games station and table tennis.
Dine There is a fully fitted kitchen and an in-house chef who is well-trained to prepare local and western meals. Claughton House is also serviced by a housekeeping, gardener and maintenance staff. Guests can do their own cooking or let the chef do the cooking for you. There is also a pavilion in the coconut laden gardens with barbecue facilities. Alcoholic beverages are not available but guests are welcome to bring their own.
Relax For relaxation Claughton House has an outdoor swimming pool which overlooks the Indian Ocean. There is plenty of lounging space in the garden, on sun loungers by the pool, or in the covered yoga sala, while relaxing massages are available on request.
Experience Tangalle can also be a good jumping-off point to visit the Yala National Park and Claughton House can easily arrange safari tours to the park. To the west is Kudawella blow hole and beach where you can learn to surf. To the east is Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project where you can watch green, hawksbill and even leatherback turtles from April to September. Other attractions include Mulgirigala Rock Temple, Bundala National Park and Uda Walawe National Park.
Location Claughton House is perched on a hillside overlooking the palm swept Kudawella Beach. It is located just outside the charming village of Tangalle.
Getting there Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo and transfer by private vehicle to Claughton House. Transfer time is approximately 4 hours.
When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
