Governor’s Residence – Colonial Charm in Yangon

Discover timeless charm & elegance in this colonial-style mansion in the heart of Yangon. The Belmond Governor’s Residence evokes the days of the colonial heritage; where tea and cakes are still served in fan-cooled porches with teak armchairs set in a lush garden. We love the peaceful atmosphere after our day’s exploration. Perhaps it is time to lounge next to the tranquil pool and sip on a refreshing cocktail.

The spacious 46 teak rooms at the Belmond Governor's Residence are huge and have a colonial feel about it. The pure white walls are luxuriously decorated in tropical cottons and silks, looking over the private lotus garden and free-form pool. A hand-carved tub seems to be straight from a romantic fairy tale grotto, perfect for a relaxing evening. All the Governor’s rooms have been newly renovated in a contemporary Burmese style with modern touches.

There is an abundance of historical sites around Belmond Governor's Residence to visit or you can venture out to Bago, Myanmar’s ancient capital and seaport. Watch the city on foot, car or bicycle. Shop-o-holics can explore one of the many markets for souvenir or exotic ingredients that make up the cuisine of Myanmar. Enjoy a cooking class along with a trip to the local market to buy fresh ingredients and the chef will teach you how to prepare a traditional salad.

Stay Belmond Governor’s Residence has 45 rooms and 4 suites. These are grouped in Deluxe and Deluxe Garden rooms, Governor's rooms and one or two-bedroom Junior Suites. All rooms have stylish décor with white walls, black carved teak and wooden polished floors. Deluxe Rooms overlook the outer courtyard while Deluxe Garden rooms have beautiful views of the lotus garden. Governor's Rooms are more spacious and contemporary, with delicate silk furnishings and complemented by modern luxuries. Junior Suites are ideal for those seeking more space with added luxury.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at the Belmond Governor’s Residence, but there are no specific facilities available. Options are available for two inter-connecting bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two twin beds, and a shared bathroom, perfect for families. Babysitting service can be arranged, if requested.

Dine Mandalay Restaurant is the main restaurant at the Belmond Governor’s Residence. It has both, indoor dining and an outside seating area overlooking the gardens and pool area. Look out for dinner evenings with Burmese curry table, which takes place in the open-air lounge. Food served includes both international and local dishes. Breakfast is served buffet with à la carte options. The open-air Mindon Lounge offers light refreshments to cooling cocktails. The Kipling Bar, named after Rudyard Kipling, has wide selection of alcoholic beverages and signature cocktails.

Relax Enjoy a pampering spa treatment at the Governor's Oasis spa, which can also be arranged in your room. Belmond Governor’s Residence has a large pool area surrounded by sun loungers. There is a boutique and gift shop at the hotel, with beautiful local artwork.

Experience Yangon is an interesting destination and there is lots to explore in the city. Belmond Governor’s Residence can arrange day tour with an expert guide to visit the downtown and the important monasteries. Alternatively, take a cooking lesson and visit the market with the hotel chef followed by a cooking demonstration where you can learn how to prepare local dishes. The hotel also has bicycles at guests' disposal.

Location Belmond Governor's Residence is one of the most luxurious hotels in Yangon. Built in 1920s, this two-storey teak mansion was home to the Governors of Burma. Today, this heritage hotel reminisces colonial charm, is perfectly placed within the Embassy Quarter and close to the spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda and just 10 minutes from the city centre.

Getting There Yangon airport has undergone a major renovation and facilitates both international and domestic terminals. There is no accommodation in the immediate vicinity of the airport. The easiest way to get to and from the airport to the city is by taxi. The Governor's Residence is 30-minutes from the airport.

When to go The best time to visit Myanmar is between October and April when the weather is dry and not so hot. At this time the warm and sunny days are ideal for sightseeing throughout the country. The temperatures start to rise in March and May to September is best avoided as this is the rainy season when sightseeing can become difficult.
