Hpa-An Lodge is a charming boutique retreat nestled at the foot of Mount Zwekabin in Myanmar’s Kayin State. Blending traditional Karen architecture with contemporary comfort, the lodge features thatched-roof bungalows made from locally sourced materials, set against a stunning backdrop of limestone mountains and lush paddy fields. The lodge's design pays homage to the region’s natural beauty, with spacious verandas, high ceilings, and large windows that invite the outdoors in.
The property offers just 18 stand-alone bungalows, ensuring privacy and tranquillity. Each is tastefully decorated with handcrafted wooden furniture, polished teak floors, and traditional Karen fabrics. Modern amenities include air-conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and private terraces overlooking the surrounding gardens or mountains—perfect for watching the sunset.
The lodge’s restaurant serves a mix of Myanmar and Western cuisine, with fresh ingredients sourced from nearby farms. Meals can be enjoyed indoors or on the open-air terrace with views of Mount Zwekabin. Hpa-An Lodge also offers guided excursions to nearby cultural and natural attractions, including the iconic Saddan Cave, Kawgun Cave, and local villages. Biking, hiking, and boat rides on the Thanlwin River are among the popular experiences, making Hpa-An Lodge an ideal base for immersive exploration and relaxation in eastern Myanmar.
Amenities
Stay Hpa-An Lodge features just 18 cottages and one dome tent. Built in traditional ‘Karen State’ style, there are 16 cottages (45 sqm) with one-bedroom and two duplex cottages (100 sqm) with three bedrooms. In addition, there is also a unique, Sky Dome Tent with one double bed. All rooms have lovely wooden interiors with plenty of natural light and private balconies with comfortable seats. Room amenities include mosquito nets, wardrobes, mini-bars and modern ensuite bathrooms.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Hpa-An Lodge. There are two large cottages, with enough room for up to five people, making them an ideal family option. These Family Cottages are split over two levels with an external staircase. Maximum occupancy per room is three persons and for family cottages is five persons.
Dine The Hpa-An Lodge has one on-site restaurant that serves delicious locally inspired dishes with some Western favourites and is possibly the best restaurant in town. Meals are served in the open-air dining room or weather permitting al fresco in the garden. The restaurant also has a weekly barbecue during the high season and the romantics can request for a Picnic Lunch at Traditional Karen House.
Relax There is lovely swimming pool with views of the surrounding mountains with a poolside terrace to enjoy an afternoon beer after a day of exploring or a sundowner. There is no TV in rooms to keep you engaged with nature but rooms have complimentary Wi-Fi and there is also a laundry service. Guests can also explore the surrounding area, visit local villages, monasteries, and go for a sunset cruise on the nearby Than-Lwin River.
Experience Hpa An is a small town with beautiful surrounds characterised by rivers, green fields and lush limestone peaks. Many travellers at the Hpa-An Lodge visit the famous Bat Cave and Sadan Cave full of Buddha images. To truly appreciate the beauty of the region, climb Mount Zwekabin, 700-metre peak for spectacular views. At its base is a lake with a tiny island, with Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda, perched atop a limestone pinnacle, offering a perfect Instagram picture.

Getting there 14-hour indirect flight to Yangon, followed by a four-hour drive to Hpa-An Lodge.
When to go The best time to visit Burma is during the dry season from November to April. At this time the warm and sunny days are ideal for sightseeing throughout the country. The temperatures start to rise in March, and May to September is best avoided as this is the rainy season when sightseeing can become difficult.
