Journey through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan on a 14-day Silk Road circuit. Explore ancient cities, dramatic landscapes, cultural landmarks, and local traditions. With expert guides and seamless travel, this multi-country adventure offers a rich blend of heritage and discovery across Central Asia’s most iconic and lesser-known highlights.
Arrive in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. Visit the Hazrati Imam complex, home to one of the world’s oldest Qurans. Wander through the bustling Chorsu Bazaar, full of spices, fabrics and food. Explore the Museum of Applied Arts in a beautiful old mansion to see Uzbekistan’s traditional crafts. Then to Independence Square and the State Museum of History to learn about the country. Tashkent is modern life with deep roots, a warm introduction to Uzbekistan and the Silk Road.
Take the high-speed train to Samarkand, one of the most famous Silk Road cities. Visit the grand Registan Square, symbol of Timurid architecture. See the Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Gur-e-Amir, Timur’s tomb. Walk through the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, where colourful tombs line a peaceful path. Learn more about the city’s history at the Afrosiab Museum, with ancient artefacts and murals. Samarkand is one of Central Asia’s most unforgettable places.
Spend another day in Samarkand. Browse the local markets and shops where artisans sell handmade goods that reflect the city’s Silk Road heritage. Visit the Ulugh Beg Observatory, a 15th century scientific wonder. Return to Shah-i-Zinda for a quieter visit, and soak up the spiritual atmosphere. In the evening, consider a cultural show that brings Uzbek music, dance and history to life. Samarkand’s mix of heritage, science and living traditions gives you a deeper connection to this legendary city.
Drive to Shakhrisabz, Timur’s birthplace. Visit the remains of Ak Saray Palace, once a grand example of Timurid ambition. See the Dorus Saodat complex and the Kok Gumbaz Mosque, where religion and memory were so important in Timur’s empire. In a mountain valley, Shakhrisabz is a quieter but equally powerful piece of Central Asia’s past. Back in Samarkand in the evening, full of stories of power, faith and art from two historic cities.
Fly or drive to Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s capital. Start with the National Museum of Antiquities, home to the famous reclining Buddha statue and many ancient treasures. Visit the Hisor Fortress, a reminder of Tajikistan’s role on old trade routes. Walk the city’s broad streets lined with Soviet-era buildings and green parks. Dushanbe feels relaxed and peaceful, but its museums and monuments tell of a long and often dramatic history. The city is your gateway to more of Tajikistan’s beauty and stories.
Leave the city for a private excursion to Shirkent National Park. Hike through hills and valleys where ancient dinosaur footprints have been preserved in stone. The landscape is peaceful, with green meadows, dramatic rock formations and mountain views. This trip combines natural beauty with a sense of wonder and history. Back in Dushanbe for the evening, you can unwind or reflect on Tajikistan’s surprising and rich heritage. This day is different—a deep breath of nature and a step back in time.
Return to Tashkent for a final look at the Uzbek capital. Visit key sites like the White House and the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts to see regional paintings and sculptures. Head to the Osh Bazaar, where stalls are full of fresh produce, local spices and handcrafted goods. Tashkent is modern, but rooted in tradition. Its mix of cultures, Soviet and Central Asian, makes it a great stop between countries, perfect for wrapping up before Kyrgyzstan.
Fly to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The city is surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Tian Shan Mountains. Explore the central square, visit the White House and the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts to see local culture on display. At the Osh Bazaar, experience daily life of Bishkek residents as you walk past colourful stalls selling textiles, fruit and spices. Bishkek is friendly, laid-back and a soft entry into Kyrgyz life and landscape.
Take a day trip to Ala Archa National Park, just outside the city. Hike through river valleys, forests and alpine meadows with views of mountain peaks. Alternatively visit the Burana Tower, a 9th century minaret surrounded by ancient stone statues called balbals. Both options show different sides of Kyrgyzstan’s past and present—one through nature, the other through the Silk Road. Back in Bishkek for the evening, with fresh air and new perspectives.
Travel to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city. Start with a walk in Panfilov Park and visit Ascension Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. Explore the Green Market, a lively space with fruit, nuts and spices. Visit the Kasteyev State Museum of Arts to see traditional Kazakh crafts and Soviet art. If time allows, watch a show at the Kazakh State Opera and Ballet Theatre. Almaty is urban life, cultural pride and mountain scenery all in one.
Take a day trip to Big Almaty Lake, a stunning blue lake surrounded by mountains. Visit a local falcon farm to learn about hunting traditions using birds of prey. Depending on your interests, explore the Charyn Canyon, often called the Grand Canyon of Central Asia, with its dramatic rock formations or visit Tamgaly Tas to see ancient rock carvings. Both options are outdoor adventure and a step closer to Kazakhstan’s wild landscapes and ancient past.
Fly to Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan’s new and futuristic capital. Visit the National Museum to see artefacts including the “Golden Man”, a symbol of Kazakh history. Take the lift up Bayterek Tower for a view of the city’s modern skyline. Admire the massive Hazrat Sultan Mosque and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. Walk through green parks and tree-lined avenues that reflect the city’s vision for the future. Nur-Sultan is a world away from the other stops on your journey.
Spend your last full day in Nur-Sultan. Choose between more city sightseeing or a trip to Burabay National Park with its lakes, rock formations and pine forests. For a more contemplative experience visit the ALZHIR Memorial Museum and learn about the women who were imprisoned during Stalin’s time. Whether outdoors or in the city, today is time to pause and reflect on the many layers of history and nature you’ve seen during your journey across Central Asia.
Your trip ends in Nur-Sultan. Transfer to the airport for your departure. Go home with memories of the region’s history, cultures, landscapes and people.
