Expedition Overview

Journey through Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan on this cultural tour that blends ancient cities, desert landscapes, and Silk Road heritage. Begin in Tashkent before stepping back in time in the walled city of Khiva. Cross into Turkmenistan to witness the flaming Darvaza gas crater and the white-marble capital of Ashgabat. Visit ancient Nissa and the ruins of Merv, a lost empire of the Silk Road.

Return to Uzbekistan for an immersive journey through Bukhara and Samarkand, where Islamic architecture, historic madrassas, and lively bazaars bring history to life. Discover traditional crafts in Gijduvan and Shakhrisabz, Tamerlane’s birthplace. From bustling markets to peaceful desert nights, this tour offers a rich mix of culture, history, and landscape. Designed for curious travellers, it connects iconic sites with lesser-known gems across two fascinating countries.

The story

This tour was conceived out of a fascination with the Silk Road's rich history, the allure of ancient cities, and the desire to offer an immersive experience into the unique cultures of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The inspiration came from the captivating mix of beautiful landscapes, architectural wonders, and the enduring legacy of empires that shaped these lands. By threading together iconic Islamic capitals, ancient ruins, and natural spectacles like the Darvaza Gas Crater, we aimed to create a journey that captures the spirit of exploration and discovery.

This expedition is ideal for those drawn to cultural depth, historical richness, and the beauty of nature's contrasts.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

YOUR TRIP DESIGN, PACE & FLEXIBILITY: This itinerary is privately operated and shaped around your preferred dates, pace and comfort level, balancing Uzbekistan’s grand Silk Road cities with Turkmenistan’s desert and archaeological contrasts. Before we finalise the design, the highest-impact choices usually are: where you would value an extra night (Khiva for atmosphere, Bukhara for depth, Samarkand for scale); how you prefer to move between centres (fastest connections versus a more scenic rhythm); and how prominently you want the desert element to feature. We will advise the most elegant sequencing to keep the journey feeling seamless rather than like a checklist.

ROUTING OPTIONS WORTH CONSIDERING: This is a two-country programme where the “flow” is as important as the highlights. Many clients choose to: add a recovery night either side of Turkmenistan to keep border days light; adjust timings to experience key sites at quieter hours; and introduce specialist craft moments (such as a private atelier visit or a more curated market experience) rather than additional monuments. If you enjoy photography, we can shape mornings and evenings around the best light and lowest footfall. If you prefer a more indulgent pace, we can reduce the number of major touring blocks and deepen the experience with finer detail, comfort breaks, and select private encounters.

LOCAL EXPERTISE, VIP SERVICE & ON-THE-GROUND SUPPORT: Travel is arranged with private transfers and a dedicated vehicle, with expert local guides meeting you for key touring days—particularly in the historic cities and at major archaeological sites. In Turkmenistan, where logistics can be more formal and tightly managed, the guiding and handling is especially important; we coordinate the practicalities in advance so the experience remains calm and unhurried. The style is discreet, proactive and pace-sensitive: reservations, timing refinements, and any real-time adjustments are handled quietly. When opportunities exist to elevate the day—better viewpoints, smoother access, more considered stops—we will propose them.

ACCOMMODATION, DESERT NIGHT & DINING APPROACH: Accommodation is selected to match a premium brief in Uzbekistan, with room categories aligned to your preferences for space, quiet, design and service. In Turkmenistan, choice can be narrower; we secure the best available options and elevate comfort through careful selection, discreet handling and thoughtful pacing. The desert night is delivered as a luxury-style camp experience, designed for comfort and atmosphere under the stars rather than basic camping. Dining is kept intentionally flexible so meals follow your tastes and energy, with curated highlights—tastings, private tables, or chef-led menus—introduced where they genuinely add value.

ENTRY FORMALITIES, LOCAL CONDITIONS & COMMERCIAL CLARITY: Turkmenistan entry arrangements can be more structured than neighbouring countries, with fixed-date components and documentation requirements; we will guide the process end-to-end and advise the most reliable timing so the programme stays smooth. On-the-ground practicalities can differ from Uzbekistan—connectivity, payment methods, and occasional site protocols—so we plan with a VIP mindset: contingency options, time buffers, and the right people in place. Pricing is built from live availability (hotels, private transport, guides and any documentation/handling), so final costs depend on season and comfort specification. Any refinements are costed transparently before confirmation, with clear deposit and balance deadlines aligned to supplier commitments.
