Tajikistan Fann Mountains Trekking Tour

Dushanbe to Khudjand – 14 Days

Expedition Overview

This high-altitude trekking tour takes you deep into the wild beauty of Tajikistan’s Fann Mountains — a region known for its dramatic peaks, alpine lakes, and remote gorges. Starting in Dushanbe and ending in Khudjand, the route winds through Chukurak, Alaudin, Mutnoye, and the legendary Chimtarga Pass, reaching over 5,000 metres. Along the way, you’ll camp under starry skies, stay with local families, and enjoy breathtaking views of glaciers, valleys, and turquoise lakes.

Designed for experienced trekkers, the tour includes challenging hikes, technical climbs, and peaceful days by pristine lakes. You’ll meet Tajik shepherds, sample traditional mountain foods, and experience both the natural and human heritage of this remote corner of Central Asia. With expert guides and full logistical support, this is an immersive journey into one of the least-explored but most rewarding trekking regions in the world — combining rugged adventure with deep cultural connection.

Highlights

CHIMTARGA PASS & PEAKTAJIKISTANS HIGHEST TREKKING POINT: Reach over 5,000 metres at Chimtarga Pass and summit the Fann Mountains' highest peak. This challenging ascent offers breathtaking views, glacier crossings, and a thrilling sense of achievement. It's a true highlight for experienced trekkers seeking adventure in Tajikistan’s most dramatic alpine landscapes.

SCENIC LAKES OF THE FANN MOUNTAINS: Camp beside turquoise alpine lakes like Bibijannat, Alaudin, and Mutnoye. Reflecting snowy peaks and surrounded by wildflowers, these lakes offer moments of peace and stunning photo opportunities. Trekking between them adds variety and beauty to your journey through Tajikistan’s high-altitude wilderness.

TREKKING THROUGH ZINDON GORGE AND THE GARDEN OF STONES: Descend into the remote Zindon Gorge and explore the mysterious Garden of Stones, a surreal landscape of unusual rock formations. These lesser-visited areas provide a striking contrast to the peaks and lakes, adding depth and wonder to your Fann Mountains trekking tour.

CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS IN MOUNTAIN VILLAGES: Experience Tajik hospitality in villages like Zimtut, where local families host trekkers with warmth and home-cooked meals. Meet shepherds along the trail and taste traditional foods. These cultural moments enrich your Tajikistan trekking adventure, creating meaningful connections beyond the scenic landscapes.

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Dushanbe

Arrive in Dushanbe, the lively capital of Tajikistan. Check into your hotel and relax after your journey. If you have time and energy, explore the city’s museums, wide boulevards, and striking monuments. Dushanbe blends Soviet-era architecture with traditional Tajik culture and is a great place to begin your adventure. Walk through parks or enjoy a local meal in one of the many cafés. Whether you prefer to rest or explore, this day offers a gentle start before your trek begins. Overnight in Dushanbe, preparing for the days of hiking and mountain scenery ahead.

DAY 2

CHURKURAK LAKE

Leave Dushanbe early and drive along the Anzob Pass towards Artuch. This scenic route brings you to the mountains and the start of your trek. Begin hiking around Chukurak Lake, surrounded by peaceful alpine scenery. The lake’s clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks, offering a calm and beautiful setting. You’ll set up camp beside the lake and enjoy a picnic dinner around a campfire. This is a perfect chance to get to know your fellow travellers and settle into the rhythm of outdoor life, under a sky filled with stars.

DAY 3

BIBIJANNAT LAKE

Wake up by the lake and start your trek towards Chukurak Pass. Walk through pastures where you may meet local shepherds and try fresh sheep’s milk. From the pass, enjoy views of the Kulikalon Lakes before descending into a lush valley. The day ends at Lake Bibijannat, a quiet spot surrounded by dramatic peaks. After a five-mile hike, set up camp near the water’s edge. Reflect on the journey so far, the people you’ve met, and the unique beauty of Tajikistan’s mountains as you settle in for another night outdoors.

DAY 4

ALAUDIN LAKE

Today’s trek lasts around seven hours, taking you through forests filled with juniper trees and colourful wildflowers. You’ll pass alpine meadows and climb to Alaudin Pass, where sweeping views of the Fann Mountains and green lakes below await. After enjoying the panoramic scenery, descend into the valley and arrive at Alaudin Lake. Tonight, you’ll stay in a local homestay, offering a warm welcome and a restful place to recover. It’s a day full of natural wonders and scenic challenges, balanced by comfort at the end.

DAY 5

MOUTNOYE LAKE

Continue the journey with a peaceful walk through birch groves and forests of juniper. Cross rocky gorges and green meadows dotted with sheep before reaching Lake Mutnoye. The trail is less demanding today, giving you time to appreciate the scenery. Set up camp by the quiet lakeside and enjoy the fresh air and silence. This day offers a slower pace, allowing space to relax, reflect, and enjoy the peaceful setting. Fall asleep to the sounds of nature, surrounded by the calm beauty of this alpine lake.

DAY 6

CHIMTARGA PASS

After breakfast, prepare for a big day. The trek to Chimtarga Pass climbs to nearly 15,000 feet. You’ll cross glacial valleys and moraines, surrounded by views of snow-covered peaks and clear blue skies. Though the five-hour hike is tough, the rewards are immense. Once at camp, relax and enjoy the sense of achievement. Take in the beauty around you—rugged mountains, quiet wilderness, and clear air. This is a key point in your journey, offering both physical challenge and stunning views of the Pamirs.

DAY 7

ZINDON GORGE

Begin early with a climb to Energya Peak, reaching over 16,400 feet. It’s a steep, rocky trail, but the views are unforgettable. After the summit, descend into Zindon Gorge through a mix of steep and grassy paths. The trail is about six miles and takes seven hours. As you walk, notice how the landscape shifts from icy heights to deep valleys. Camp tonight in the gorge, a peaceful and remote spot. This day offers high adventure and deep satisfaction, with views and memories that will stay with you.

DAY 8

MIRALI PASS BASE

Today’s route leads to the base of Mirali Pass at 15,700 feet. After breakfast, hike nearly three miles across loose stones and rocky slopes. The trail is short but steep and demanding. Once at the campsite, take time to rest and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The surrounding views are breathtaking—sharp peaks, open skies, and silent ridgelines. This quiet camp at the foot of the pass is a good place to prepare mentally and physically for tomorrow’s technical ascent to the highest peak of your trek.

DAY 9

CHIMTARGA PEAK

Set off early for the most challenging day of the trek. Use ropes and crampons to climb the steep, icy slopes of Mirali Pass. After reaching the top, continue upwards another 1,640 feet to reach Chimtarga Peak, the highest point in the Fann Mountains. The summit rewards you with an unforgettable 360-degree view of the entire range. After photos and rest, descend carefully back to camp. It’s a long, tough day, but the sense of achievement and the views from the summit make it truly special.

DAY 10

BOLSHOYE LAKE

If the weather is good, take this bonus day to visit Bolshoye Lake, near the Allo Lakes at the foot of Moscow Peak. The hike is easier and offers a refreshing contrast to the previous day’s challenge. The lake’s calm, clear waters are perfect for a swim or just relaxing beside the shore. Surrounded by alpine views and cool breezes, this day is a reward for your efforts. It’s a great chance to recharge, enjoy nature at a slower pace, and take in more of the Fann Mountains’ beauty.

DAY 11

BIG ALLO LAKE

Hike out of Zindon Gorge and pass through the fascinating ‘Garden of Stones’—a field filled with large, oddly shaped boulders. The route leads to Big Allo Lake, one of the most scenic spots in the region. Camp by the lakeside under fir trees, with views of the surrounding cliffs and peaks. The clear water, forest setting, and remote location make this campsite a highlight of the trip. Relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings as you near the end of your mountain adventure.

DAY 12

ZIMTUT VILLAGE

Wake up by the lake and enjoy breakfast with a view. Then begin your descent to where the Archimaydan and Amshut rivers meet. A scenic drive takes you to Zimtut village, where you’ll be welcomed by local families who host mountain travellers. Walk through the village or simply relax after your long journey. The day ends with a traditional farewell dinner—a celebration of everything you’ve experienced so far, from the mountain peaks to local culture and hospitality.

DAY 13

KHUDJAND

The trekking is over, but there’s still more to see. Travel across the beautiful Shakhristan Pass and stop in Istaravshan, an old town full of charm. Continue the drive to Khudjand and check into a comfortable hotel. Take the rest of the day to unwind or explore the city’s parks, markets, and museums. Khudjand is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, sitting along the Syr Darya River. After days in the mountains, enjoy the comforts of city life before your final leg.

DAY 14

KHUDJAND - DEPARTURE

After breakfast, cross the border into Uzbekistan and travel to Tashkent. Once in the capital, check into your hotel and enjoy a final city tour. Visit Tashkent’s monuments, bustling bazaars, and Islamic sites. End the day with a farewell dinner and a chance to reflect on your incredible journey through Tajikistan’s mountains and valleys. Stay overnight in Tashkent before continuing your onward travel the next day.
