Central Asia 5-STAN Discovery Expedition

Bishkek to Ashgabat – 17 days

Journey across the heart of Central Asia on a 17-day small-group 5-STAN adventure spanning five countries, from Kyrgyzstan’s green valleys to Turkmenistan’s white-marble capital. Begin in Bishkek and the Chon Kemin Valley with a visit to the UNESCO-listed Burana Tower, then head east to Issyk-Kul’s petroglyphs and the high pastures of Karkyra for a night of yurt glamping. Cross into Kazakhstan for the alpine beauty of the Kolsai Lakes and the dramatic rock formations of Charyn Canyon, finishing with a taste of Almaty’s museums, parks and bustling bazaars.

Continue by air to Tajikistan for Dushanbe’s cultural highlights and the historic Hissar Fortress, then fly into Uzbekistan for an immersive run through its greatest Silk Road cities—Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and the walled wonder of Khiva. Cross the Shavat border into Turkmenistan, tour Dashoguz, and end in Ashgabat with UNESCO Nissa, grand monuments, bazaars and an Akhal-Teke horse visit—an epic, well-paced sweep of history, landscapes and living cultures.

Highlights

KOLSAI LAKES AND CHARYN CANYON DAY TRIP FROM ALMATY: Discover two of Kazakhstan’s most photographed landscapes in one beautifully paced sequence. Walk the pine-framed shores of the Kolsai Lakes, where still water mirrors mountain ridgelines and forested slopes. Then continue to Charyn Canyon for a short hike among sculpted rock formations and dramatic viewpoints, often compared to a smaller Grand Canyon. With expert guiding and comfortable transfers, it’s a standout nature pairing that complements the cities.

SAMARKAND REGISTAN SQUARE AND BUKHARA UNESCO OLD TOWN: Step into the Silk Road’s greatest architectural theatre, starting at Samarkand’s Registan Square—three monumental madrasahs wrapped in blue tilework and geometric detail. Continue through Timurid landmarks including Guri Emir and the Shah-i Zinda mausoleums, then shift to Bukhara’s UNESCO old town for the Kalyan Minaret, domed bazaars, Lyabi Hauz and the Ark Fortress. It’s an unhurried deep-dive into Central Asia’s golden age.

KHIVA WALLED CITY WALKING TOUR AND CARAVANSERAI HERITAGE: Explore Khiva on foot, where the compact, walled inner city preserves the feeling of a trading-era oasis. Wander ancient lanes past carved wooden columns, turquoise-tiled portals and sun-baked walls, visiting palaces, mosques, madrasahs and minarets with stories that bring the caravan world to life. The walking format keeps the experience immersive and atmospheric, with frequent photo stops and time to browse local craft stalls.

ASHGABAT CITY TOUR AND UNESCO NISSA WITH AKHAL-TEKE HORSES: Finish in Turkmenistan’s remarkable capital, a city of grand monuments and white-marble boulevards. Visit UNESCO-listed ancient Nissa for deep historical context, then tour key Ashgabat highlights—national museums, parks, iconic civic landmarks and Gulistan Bazaar. A visit to an Akhal-Teke horse stable adds a uniquely Turkmen dimension, with the chance to see (and sometimes ride) one of the world’s most celebrated horse breeds.

The story

The Central Asia Expedition began with a clear purpose: to celebrate and help safeguard the nature, culture and wildlife that make the Stans of Central Asia so compelling. Travelling through Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, we saw how the region’s dramatic mountains, deserts and steppe, and its Silk Road heritage, can be overlooked or simplified. We designed this Central Asia journey to keep those stories visible, while supporting local communities through responsible, sustainable tourism.

The inspiration came from real encounters: Kyrgyz nomads welcoming us into yurt life, the architectural power of Samarkand and Bukhara, and the raw beauty of Charyn Canyon and the highland valleys. Cultural immersion sits at the heart of the expedition, with experiences that feel personal rather than staged.

This Central Asia adventure connects travellers to the ancient Silk Road through expert guiding, authentic hospitality and carefully chosen routes. It is a tour designed to honour living traditions and help ensure Central Asia’s landscapes and cultures flourish for generations.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is a 17-day small-group journey across Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, led by experienced local guides with private drivers (and separate country teams where required). The pace is cultural and scenic: city touring on foot, bazaars, historic sites and easy nature walks (Kolsai, Charyn viewpoints). Expect early starts on key sightseeing days, a few long road transfers, and multiple border/airport processes. Touring in Central Asia can be impacted by traffic, roadworks, weather, and administrative formalities, so flexibility is essential. Some services are delivered by independent third parties (airlines, hotels, transport providers), and last-minute changes can occasionally occur.

ACCOMMODATION, MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation is a mix of comfortable hotels in major cities plus memorable rural stays, including yurt glamping in Karkyra and regional hotels near Saty/Kolsai. Rooms are typically twin-share; single rooms may be available with a supplement, subject to availability (yurt inventory is limited). Meals follow the day-by-day programme (B/L/D): breakfasts are generally included, with selected lunches/dinners—often more frequent outside the main cities. Food is hearty and regional: breads, grilled meats, soups, rice dishes and seasonal produce. Vegetarian options exist but can be limited in rural areas—please advise allergies and strict diets before booking so suppliers can be briefed. Drink sealed bottled water; keep a refillable bottle for longer drives.

TRAVEL DAYS, FLIGHTS, BORDERS & TIMING: The itinerary includes several flight sectors (e.g., Almaty–Dushanbe, Dushanbe–Tashkent, and Dashoguz–Ashgabat, plus international sectors as scheduled). Flight times and routings can change at short notice, and border crossings (notably Shavat into Turkmenistan) can take time due to procedures and visa checks. We plan realistic pacing and will adjust sightseeing order if schedules shift. Pack with airline baggage limits in mind and keep essentials (medication, valuables, a change of clothes) in hand luggage on flight days. Your guide will brief you on meeting points, check-in timing and any documentation needed for crossings.

WEATHER, SEASONS & WHAT TO PACK: Conditions vary widely across the route: mountain air in Kyrgyzstan/Kazakhstan, hotter lowlands in Uzbekistan, and desert-style heat or dust in parts of Turkmenistan. Even in warm months, evenings can be cool at altitude and in yurt camps. Bring breathable layers, a warm mid-layer, sun protection, and a compact waterproof jacket. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for uneven streets, monuments and short hikes. Modest dress is recommended for mosques and religious sites (shoulders and knees covered). A small daypack is useful for water, camera gear and layers. Road travel is part of the experience; motion-sickness tablets can help on mountain routes.

SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan remain cash-first destinations and you should plan accordingly. In Turkmenistan, please bring US dollars in cash only for personal spending—no euros and do not rely on credit/debit cards, as card acceptance is extremely limited; carry a sensible mix of small denominations for water, snacks, small purchases and tips. In Uzbekistan, local currency is the som (UZS) and cash is still widely used even though cards/ATMs are improving in major cities; exchange and withdrawals can be easier in Tashkent/Samarkand than in smaller towns, so keep a buffer for rural days. Tipping is customary and appreciated across the region; budget for gratuities for your driver(s), local guides, hotel staff and porters, with your Tour Leader advising a fair daily guideline based on group size and local norms. Please note that extra hours beyond the published programme (additional sightseeing, extended drives, late-night requests) may incur additional payments locally, so flag any changes early so costs can be agreed transparently.

PASSPORTS, VISAS & TRAVEL INSURANCE: Entry requirements vary by nationality and can change, so you are responsible for holding the correct visas and documents. For British passport holders, visa rules are generally straightforward for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, while Tajikistan typically requires an e-visa arranged in advance via official channels. Turkmenistan requires a visa and usually visa support/Letter of Invitation via an authorised agent; visas may be issued in advance or on arrival depending on current rules and routing. Turkmenistan has signalled moves towards e-visas, but implementation details can vary. Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover the full itinerary, including flights and overland travel.
