Arrive in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, and you’ll be greeted and taken to a local private home. This homestay is a comfortable place to rest and get your first taste of daily life in Tajikistan. Spend the afternoon relaxing or taking a walk around the city. Dushanbe is a mix of modern and history, set in a stunning natural environment. You might choose to visit nearby cafes or parks or just rest after your flight. It’s a gentle start to the journey ahead, giving you time to settle in before the adventure really begins tomorrow.
Breakfast at your host’s home then head out to see Dushanbe’s sights. Visit the peaceful Botanical Gardens and the grand monument at the Place of Ismoil Samoni. Walk through a local market, where the city’s name—meaning “Monday”—reminds us of its trading past. See colourful stalls, traditional products and friendly locals. Lunch and dinner today will be at local restaurants so you can try Tajik food. From history to food and local culture today gives you a better understanding of life in the capital before you leave the city for the mountains tomorrow.
Leave Dushanbe and drive through the beautiful Varzob Gorge, where mountains and waterfalls line the road. Drive through a tunnel and into the Zerafchan Valley and then to the stunning Iskanderkul Lake in the Fann Mountains. Take a short walk by the lake and visit a nearby waterfall then continue to the quiet village of Saritag. From here local guides with donkeys will take you to your homestay. Surrounded by nature and mountain views your stay in Saritag marks the start of a more rural and immersive part of the journey through Tajikistan.
Wake up by the Karakul River and have breakfast in the mountain air. Today’s trek follows forest trails along the Dugdone Stream. The path winds through valleys full of greenery and cool mountain breezes. The walk is beautiful and peaceful. As the day goes on you’ll gradually climb in altitude and reach your campsite around 9,500m. Relax in the evening surrounded by the silence of the mountains. Dinner and sleep under the stars in this highland setting, preparing for more stunning views and mountain passes ahead.
Start the day with a climb over a mountain pass and enjoy the challenge and the views. As you descend the Dugdone Glacier appears, an impressive sight of ice and rock. The route continues into Sarikhodang Gorge where you’ll find open spaces, quiet streams and fields used by local herders. Stop and take in the scenery and photos of the glacier. Camp here tonight, surrounded by nature, far from the noise of everyday life. The sunset and clear night sky make this a perfect place to rest and relax.
Today’s trek goes to Lake Ptchikoul, a quiet spot for a break and lunch. Surrounded by mountain views this is a great place to rest and take photos. The walk continues into Archa Maidan Valley where you’ll find your next campsite. The valley is dramatic and green and feels calm and comfortable. As the evening sets in enjoy the views and settle into camp life again. This part of the journey is less strenuous and more relaxing, so you can recharge and enjoy the beauty of the Fann Mountains.
Seven hours of walking through valleys and mountain trails today. This is not just about nature but about people. You’ll pass through remote villages and meet locals and learn about their way of life. It’s a day of cultural discovery and connection, where traditional homes and farming scenes give you a glimpse into Tajik life. In the evening you’ll arrive in Gaza Gointan village where a local family will welcome you into their home. A bed, home-cooked food and the warmth of rural hospitality in this quiet part of Tajikistan.
Start the day with a scenic hike up to Gointan Pass and enjoy the views. Descend to Tchoukourak Lake and stop for a relaxed lunch. The trail continues through peaceful scenery to Artuch Base where a comfortable homestay awaits. After several days of trekking and camping this is a welcome chance to rest properly, reflect on the journey so far and recharge for the next bit. Surrounded by hills and quiet air Artuch is a peaceful stop before heading higher.
Breakfast and then a big day of walking through mountain scenery. First visit Tchoukourak Lake again and enjoy the calm waters. Then hike through small shepherd villages and get a glimpse into rural life in the highlands. The path winds through valleys with stunning views of the Chimtarga mountains. Finally arrive at Koulikalon Lake, a beautiful alpine lake perfect for a picnic and maybe a swim in its warmer waters. Camp by the lake tonight surrounded by the calm open landscape and clear skies. This is one of the tour’s most scenic and peaceful overnight stops.
Walk alongside Koulikalon Lake in the morning with the turquoise water always in view. Three to four hours of gentle trails and open terrain and you’ll arrive at Douchokha Lake at 9,500m. This small but beautiful lake is where you’ll set up camp. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the water, taking in the mountain views and resting after the walk. Tonight sleep under the stars surrounded by the silence of nature. Another rest day to enjoy the slower pace of mountain life.
Today is a challenging but rewarding day. Climb to Alaoutdine Pass at 12,500m. The views from the top are stunning with snow-capped peaks like Zamok and Chapdara. After taking in the scenery descend to Alaudin Lake, a crystal clear mountain lake surrounded by cliffs. A peaceful and beautiful spot to spend the evening. Camp by the lake and rest tonight. This part of the Fann Mountains is the most dramatic and today’s walk is one of the highlights of the whole tour.
Trek through spectacular mountain scenery today passing by Zamok, Paygamber and Energiya peaks. Climb over Kaznok Pass and then to Piala Lake, a hidden lake surrounded by rocks and wildflowers. From there to Moutnoye Lake, a glacial lake at the foot of Mount Chimtarga, the highest peak in Tajikistan. At 11,500m this is one of the most remote and impressive places you’ll visit. Relax with a picnic and dinner outside and camp tonight. The landscape here is unforgettable, silence, still water and towering mountains all around.
Early morning ascent to Kaznok Pass, over 13,000m. The views from here are some of the best of the tour, with mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. Picnic lunch with a view and then descend. Return to Alaudin Lake in the afternoon, retracing some of your steps. The familiar sight of the lake is calming after the hard climb. Spend the evening by the water, your final night in the high mountains before the journey down.
Trek over Tchapdara Pass and down into Bodkhona Gorge. The path leads you down to Pasruddaria Valley where streams run through green fields and sheep graze on mountain grass. The scenery here is softer and more pastoral after days of high peaks and glaciers. Set up your final camp in this peaceful valley surrounded by water and birdsong. The gentle terrain marks the beginning of your return to civilisation, a quiet place to reflect on the two weeks you’ve spent in the Tajik wilderness.
Short trek to the road and drive back to Dushanbe. Stop for a traditional lunch and enjoy the comfort of familiar surroundings after days in the mountains. In the afternoon visit the Tajikistan History Museum and the Museum of Musical Instruments and learn more about the country’s culture. End the day at a bustling bazaar and have dinner at a local restaurant. Return to your private home stay in Dushanbe and relax and reflect on your journey through Tajikistan’s diverse landscapes.
After breakfast transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Your time in Tajikistan ends with memories of mountain trails, glacial lakes, warm hospitality and quiet valleys.
