Astana to Almaty – 17 Days
This immersive 17-day journey takes you deep into the diverse landscapes, cultures, and histories of Kazakhstan. Begin in the bold modern capital of Astana before heading west to the haunting remains of the Aral Sea. Discover ancient Silk Road cities like Turkestan and Taraz, and explore sacred mausoleums, ruined citadels, and remote desert towns. Along the way, gain a deeper understanding of Kazakhstan’s shifting identity through stories of resilience, spirituality, and ecological change.
The adventure continues through dramatic national parks, mountain lakes, and colourful canyons. Hike through the Aksu-Zhabagly Reserve, marvel at the beauty of the Kolsai Lakes, and experience the silence of Altyn Emel’s painted hills. From eagle hunting traditions to futuristic city skylines, this tour combines cultural encounters with awe-inspiring natural beauty. Carefully paced and led by expert guides, this is a journey for curious travellers seeking connection, contrast, and the true heart of Kazakhstan.
SILK ROAD HERITAGE IN TURKESTAN: Explore Turkestan, one of Kazakhstan’s oldest cities, where history lives on in ancient walls and sacred sites. Visit the UNESCO-listed Mausoleum of Hodzha Ahmed Yassawi and learn about the city’s key role along the Silk Road. This stop reveals the spiritual and cultural legacy of Central Asia’s historic crossroads.
ARAL SEA ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY: Visit Aralsk to witness the dramatic legacy of the Aral Sea’s disappearance. Walk among rusting ships stranded on dry seabeds and hear local stories of loss and adaptation. Through museums and conversations, this moving experience explores environmental change and its deep social impact on Kazakhstan’s remote communities.
KAZAKHSTAN NATURE RESERVES & MOUNTAIN LAKES: Walk through Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve and hike to the Kolsai Lakes, surrounded by forests and alpine scenery. These protected areas are rich in wildlife and offer sweeping canyon views, quiet mountain trails, and peaceful lakeside moments. Discover Kazakhstan’s unspoilt nature in regions few travellers ever reach.
CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS IN ALMATY & BEYOND: In Almaty, explore colourful cathedrals, leafy parks, and musical traditions. Beyond the city, meet rural communities, observe eagle hunting practices, and experience nomadic hospitality in mountain villages. This journey blends city life with authentic local encounters, offering insight into the diverse culture and warm spirit of Kazakhstan.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Journey across Kazakhstan on a 17-day small-group tour exploring ancient Silk Road cities, dramatic natural landscapes, and vibrant local culture. From the Aral Sea to mountain lakes and canyons, experience the true heart of Central Asia with expert guides, meaningful encounters, and carefully selected stays throughout.
Arrive late in the evening in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan’s capital city. Welcome and transfer to your hotel. Check in and relax after your journey and enjoy the first glimpse of this modern city. Nur-Sultan is also known as Astana and is famous for its futuristic architecture and wide boulevards. Tonight is just to unwind and recover before your first full day of exploration tomorrow.
Start the day by visiting the Baiterek Tower, the symbol of modern Kazakhstan with great views of the city. Next visit the Khan Shatyr shopping centre, a transparent tent like structure. In the afternoon visit a former Soviet labour camp where you will learn about a difficult chapter in Kazakhstan’s history. Back to the city for dinner and a quiet evening at the hotel. Today is a mix of modern landmarks and deep history, two very different sides of the city. Rest tonight.
Begin your journey to the Aral Sea, one of the world’s largest lakes. Fly and train to the remote town of Aralsk. Once a busy fishing port, it now lies far from the receding shoreline. The town is a haunting reminder of the lake’s environmental collapse. Arrive late at night and transfer to your local hotel. Long journey but today marks the transition from Kazakhstan’s modern cities to its lesser known regions. Rest up for a big day tomorrow.
Spend the day exploring the ghost town of the Aral Sea. See the rusting ships in the sand and walk on the dry seabed that once was teeming with life. Visit the local museum to learn how this environmental disaster unfolded and how it affected local communities. Meet the locals who will share their stories of resilience and adaptation. The landscape is barren but full of meaning, it’s about climate change and human impact on nature. Back to your hotel in Aralsk tonight and reflect on what you’ve seen.
Quiet morning with optional free time to revisit the ship graveyard or Aralsk town centre. Later in the day board the overnight train to Turkestan, travel east across the steppe. Settle into your cabin and watch the Kazakh countryside go by. As the train rocks through the night it’s a good time to relax, read or chat with fellow travellers. This long journey bridges two very different worlds – from a modern ecological disaster to ancient historical wonders in Turkestan.
Arrive in Turkestan by early afternoon and check in to your hotel. Start the day by walking around the city, known for its deep spiritual significance and ancient history. The city dates back to the 4th century and has been a centre of pilgrimage for centuries. Free time to explore Turkestan’s quiet streets, visit local markets or just rest. In the evening prepare for tomorrow’s in-depth visits to the region’s most important historical and religious sites.
Start the day at the Mausoleum of Hodzha Ahmed Yassawi, a key figure in Sufi Islam. Admire the blue-tiled architecture and peaceful courtyards. Later drive to the ancient city ruins of Otrar, once a major Silk Road hub. Walk among the remains of walls and streets that date back over 1,000 years. In the afternoon take the train to Tjulkabas. On arrival settle into your guesthouse in this rural village surrounded by hills. Tonight is a quiet rural stay, far from the city crowds.
Today you enter the Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve, the oldest protected area in Central Asia. Walk along the Aksu Canyon, carved by the Aksu River, with stunning mountain views and wild landscapes. Keep an eye out for eagles, marmots or ibex along the way. Stop for a scenic picnic surrounded by nature. This peaceful reserve is a haven for wildlife lovers and photographers. In the evening return to your guesthouse for a quiet night’s rest, with the sound of the wind and river outside your window.
Travel to the historic city of Taraz, once a major stop on the Silk Road. Visit the History Museum and see archaeological finds from across the region. Then visit two sacred sites: the Mausoleum of Alye Ata and the intricately decorated Aisha Bibi Mausoleum. These give a deeper understanding of the area’s cultural significance. In the evening board the overnight train to Almaty. As you settle in the train takes you from ancient history to modern Kazakhstan’s largest city.
Arrive in Almaty and transfer to your hotel. Start the day by visiting Panfilov Park, a peaceful green space with the colourful Zenkov Cathedral. Then visit the Museum of Kazakh Musical Instruments to learn about the country’s rich traditions in sound and storytelling. Walk around Almaty’s broad avenues, lively cafes and green spaces. This is a city of contrasts – modern and traditional, vibrant and relaxed. Tonight enjoy local cuisine and relax at your hotel.
Travel to Altyn Emel National Park, a vast landscape of deserts, mountains and rare wildlife. Drive past Kapchagai reservoir and watch for herds of wild gazelles and donkeys. Explore one of Kazakhstan’s most important nature reserves, home to the Singing Dune, red rock canyons and endless open skies. This is a land of silence and wonder. Tonight stay at a local guesthouse where simplicity meets comfort. End your day with dinner under the stars and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of life in the Kazakh wilderness.
Head into the Aktau and Kakatau mountains for a day of hiking and exploration. These multi-coloured hills are rich in fossils and shaped by wind over millions of years. The scenery is surreal, almost otherworldly, with red, white and yellow rock formations. Walk along quiet trails and take in views that stretch for miles. Lunch is outdoors before returning to your guesthouse in Basshi village. The evening is free to relax, stargaze or chat with locals over tea.
Today you drive to Saty village, the base for visiting the beautiful Kolsai Lakes. Trek or horseback ride through forested hills to the first lake, a pristine body of water high in the mountains. The scenery is stunning – clear water, alpine trees and mountain air. You may meet nomadic herders along the way. Spend time walking by the lake, taking photos or simply enjoying the stillness. Return to Saty village for a hearty dinner and a night in a cosy guesthouse.
Drive back to Almaty, stopping at the dramatic Charyn Canyon. Often compared to the Grand Canyon, its colourful cliffs and strange rock shapes make it a must-see. Hike along the edge or down into the canyon for close-up views. Also visit a local eagle hunting museum to learn about this ancient Kazakh tradition. By late afternoon arrive back in Almaty and check into your hotel. After dinner enjoy a quiet evening to reflect on your journey through Kazakhstan’s wild and varied landscapes.
Escape the city and head to the Medeo ice-skating rink, set high in the mountains above Almaty. If you like, take a cable car up to the Chymbulak ski resort and hike further to the top for amazing panoramic views. The mountain air is fresh and the scenery is spectacular. This alpine escape is a refreshing contrast to the drier landscapes seen earlier. Return to the city in the late afternoon and enjoy a relaxed final evening in Kazakhstan’s cultural capital.
Today is free to explore Almaty as you wish. Shop for souvenirs, try local food at cafes or revisit favourite spots in the city. You can also visit more museums, galleries or green spaces or take a short day hike in the nearby hills. It’s a day to relax or enjoy last minute discoveries before the trip ends. Tonight enjoy a final dinner or quiet evening at your hotel and reflect on your journey.
Today marks the conclusion of your enriching expedition across Kazakhstan. As you check out of your hotel, reflect on the remarkable experiences and the diverse beauty you've encountered. You'll be transferred to the airport, ready to embark on your next adventure or return home with memories that will last a lifetime.
