Kazakhstan Cultural Trekking Adventure

Alstana to Almaty – 14 Days

Expedition Overview

This 14-day Kazakhstan Cultural Trekking Adventure blends ancient history, Soviet heritage, and highland trekking across some of the country’s most fascinating regions. Experience Kazakhstan's diverse landscapes, from sweeping steppes to rugged mountains and serene lakes. Begin in Astana with its futuristic skyline before uncovering powerful stories of political repression in Karaganda. Explore mausoleums, petroglyphs, and Bronze Age sites around Ulytau, and stay in traditional huts for a taste of rural Kazakh life.

The second half of the journey moves south to Almaty and the Tien Shan mountains. Trek through Turgen Valley and cross the Assy Plateau, where nomadic herders still roam. Visit Kolsai Lake and hike beside its crystal waters, then marvel at the dramatic Charyn Canyon and witness Kazakhstan's eagle hunting traditions. With city experiences, remote mountain treks, and deep cultural encounters, this itinerary is ideal for those seeking a balanced and immersive holiday in Kazakhstan. The adventure offers both physical challenge and rich storytelling in one of Asia’s least explored destinations, making Kazakhstan a standout among Central Asian countries.

Highlights

SOVIET HISTORY & CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS: Visit the ALZHIR memorial and Karaganda’s labour camp museums to understand Kazakhstan’s Soviet legacy. Explore Ulytau’s archaeological sites and connect with local families in traditional villages. Experience some of Kazakhstan’s most stunning landscapes, where breathtaking mountain views and remote wilderness create an unforgettable adventure. This tour is ideal for travellers seeking off-the-beaten-track hiking experiences in Kazakhstan’s dramatic southern landscapes.

NATURAL WONDERS OF SOUTHERN KAZAKHSTAN: Witness the red rock formations of Charyn Canyon, often compared to the Grand Canyon. Visit Kolsai Lake, framed by mountains and pine forests. These natural wonders provide dramatic contrasts—from lush alpine scenery to arid canyons—revealing the geographical diversity that makes Kazakhstan such a stunning destination.

ALMATY CITY & STEPPE MODERNITY: Explore Almaty’s wide tree lined streets, leafy avenues, Soviet-era monuments, and surrounding mountains. Visit Medeo ice rink and enjoy sweeping views from a nearby ski resort. Together with Astana’s futuristic skyline, these cities show how modern Kazakhstan blends steppe traditions with a bold and evolving urban identity.
