Tashkent to Nur-Sultan – 14 Days

Expedition Overview

Travel across four countries on this immersive journey through Central Asia, tracing the route of the legendary Silk Road. From the grand monuments of Samarkand and the historic mosques of Tashkent to the green valleys of Kyrgyzstan and the modern skyline of Nur-Sultan, this itinerary blends ancient history with contemporary culture. In Tajikistan, explore mountain fortresses and fossil trails, while Kazakhstan offers striking natural wonders like Big Almaty Lake and Charyn Canyon, as well as breathtaking mountain landscapes and pristine, untouched scenery.

Each destination adds a new layer of insight—Islamic architecture, Soviet-era legacies, bustling bazaars, and nomadic traditions all come together in this carefully curated experience. With high-speed trains, private drivers, and local guides throughout, the journey offers comfort alongside discovery. Whether you’re wandering through colourful markets or admiring UNESCO-listed sites, the Great Silk Road Circuit Tour reveals Central Asia’s enduring spirit and surprising diversity in one unforgettable multi-country adventure, standing out among Silk Road tours for its depth and diversity.

Highlights

SILK ROAD HERITAGE IN SAMARKAND: Explore Samarkand’s UNESCO-listed wonders, including the opportunity to visit Registan Square, a world heritage site renowned for its iconic buildings and rich history. Discover Shah-i-Zinda and Gur-e-Amir, architectural marvels that showcase the city's status as a museum city. These Timurid masterpieces reveal the artistic and spiritual heights of the Silk Road era, with intricate tilework, vibrant domes, and historical significance that brings Central Asia’s golden age of culture and trade vividly to life.

MULTI-COUNTRY TRAVEL MADE SEAMLESS: Travel across Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan with high-speed trains, domestic flights, and expert guides. CULTURAL CAPITALS OF CENTRAL ASIA: Visit the vibrant capitals of Tashkent, Dushanbe, Bishkek, Almaty, and Nur-Sultan. Each capital offers a distinct perspective—from ancient citadels and Soviet relics to futuristic architecture and lively bazaars. This journey reveals how diverse cultures have evolved across Central Asia while retaining deep connections to Silk Road identity and traditions. Enjoy guided sightseeing tours and city tours in key destinations to fully experience their unique character.

SCENIC LANDSCAPES & NATURAL WONDERS: Experience Central Asia’s incredible landscapes, from Ala Archa’s alpine trails to Charyn Canyon’s dramatic landscape of towering cliffs and Big Almaty Lake’s turquoise waters. DAY 1

Tashkent

Arrive in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. Begin your day with a guided walking tour of Tashkent's key sites, including the Hazrati Imam complex, home to one of the world’s oldest Qurans. Use local transport to navigate between attractions as you wander through the bustling Chorsu Bazaar, full of spices, fabrics and food. Explore the Museum of Applied Arts in a beautiful old mansion to see Uzbekistan’s traditional crafts. Then continue to Independence Square and the State Museum of History to learn about the country. Tashkent is modern life with deep roots, a warm introduction to Uzbekistan and the Silk Road.

DAY 2

Samarkand

Take the high-speed train to Samarkand, one of the most famous Silk Road cities. Visit the grand Registan Square, symbol of Timurid architecture. See the Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Gur-e-Amir, Timur's tomb. Walk through the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, where colourful tombs line a peaceful path. Learn more about the city's history at the Afrosiab Museum, with ancient artefacts and murals. Samarkand is one of Central Asia's most unforgettable places.

DAY 3

Samarkand

Spend another day in Samarkand. Join a guided walking tour to explore the city's UNESCO-protected historic sites and learn about its rich cultural and architectural significance. Browse the local markets and shops, where artisans sell handmade goods that reflect the city’s Silk Road heritage, and experience authentic local life as you wander through bustling stalls and lively neighbourhoods. Visit the Ulugh Beg Observatory, a 15th century scientific wonder. Return to Shah-i-Zinda for a quieter visit, and soak up the spiritual atmosphere. In the evening, enjoy some free time to explore on your own or consider a cultural show that brings Uzbek music, dance and history to life. Samarkand’s mix of heritage, science and living traditions gives you a deeper connection to this legendary city.

DAY 4

Samarkand

Drive to the ancient city of Shakhrisabz, Timur’s birthplace. Enjoy breathtaking landscapes and striking mountain landscapes en route. Visit the remains of Ak Saray Palace, once a grand example of Timurid ambition. See the Dorus Saodat complex and the Kok Gumbaz Mosque, where religion and memory were so important in Timur’s empire. In a mountain valley, Shakhrisabz is a quieter but equally powerful piece of Central Asia’s past. Back in Samarkand in the evening, full of stories of power, faith and art from two historic cities.

DAY 5

Dushanbe

Fly or drive to Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s capital. Begin your day with a guided sightseeing tour, starting at the National Museum of Antiquities, home to the famous reclining Buddha statue and many ancient treasures. Visit the Hisor Fortress, where you can explore ancient ruins that highlight Tajikistan’s role on old trade routes. Walk the city’s broad streets lined with Soviet-era buildings and green parks. Dushanbe feels relaxed and peaceful, but its museums and monuments tell of a long and often dramatic history. The city is your gateway to more of Tajikistan’s beauty and stories.

DAY 6

Dushanbe

Leave the city for a private excursion to Shirkent National Park. Hike through hills and valleys where ancient dinosaur footprints have been preserved in stone. The park features a dramatic landscape with striking rock formations, deep ravines, and breathtaking landscapes of green meadows and mountain views. This trip combines natural beauty with a sense of wonder and history. Back in Dushanbe for the evening, you can unwind or reflect on Tajikistan’s surprising and rich heritage. This day is different—a deep breath of nature and a step back in time.

DAY 7

Tashkent

Return to Tashkent for a final look at the Uzbek capital. Use local transport to explore the city centre, visiting key sites like the White House and the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts to see regional paintings and sculptures. Head to the Osh Bazaar, where stalls are full of fresh produce, local spices and handcrafted goods. After the planned visits, enjoy some free time in the evening to explore Tashkent at your own pace. Tashkent is modern, but rooted in tradition. Its mix of cultures, Soviet and Central Asian, makes it a great stop between countries, perfect for wrapping up before Kyrgyzstan.

DAY 8

Bishkek

Fly to Bishkek, the vibrant capital of Kyrgyzstan. The city is set against the stunning backdrop of the Tien Shan mountains. Enjoy a guided city tour: explore the central square, visit the White House and the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts to see local culture on display. At the Osh Bazaar, experience daily life of Bishkek residents as you walk past colourful stalls selling textiles, fruit and spices. Bishkek is friendly, laid-back and a soft entry into Kyrgyz life and landscape.

DAY 9

Bishkek

Take a day trip to Ala Archa National Park, just outside the city. Enjoy a walking tour through river valleys, forests, and alpine meadows, all set against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains with views of dramatic peaks. Alternatively, visit the Burana Tower, a 9th century minaret and a prime example of ancient ruins, surrounded by ancient stone statues called balbals. Both options show different sides of Kyrgyzstan’s past and present—one through nature, the other through the Silk Road. Back in Bishkek for the evening, with fresh air and new perspectives.

DAY 10

Almaty

Travel to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture. Start with a walk in Panfilov Park and visit Ascension Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. Explore the Green Market, a lively space with fruit, nuts and spices. Visit the Kasteyev State Museum of Arts to see traditional Kazakh crafts and Soviet art. If time allows, watch a show at the Kazakh State Opera and Ballet Theatre.

DAY 11

Almaty

Take a day trip to Big Almaty Lake, where you can admire the breathtaking landscapes of this stunning blue lake surrounded by mountains. En route, visit a local falcon farm to learn about hunting traditions using birds of prey. Depending on your interests, explore the Charyn Canyon, often called the Grand Canyon of Central Asia, and experience its dramatic landscape with towering cliffs and deep ravines, or visit Tamgaly Tas to see ancient ruins and ancient rock carvings. Both options offer outdoor adventure and a step closer to Kazakhstan’s wild landscapes and ancient past.

image
Almaty

DAY 12

Nur-Sultan

Fly to Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan’s vibrant and futuristic capital. Visit the National Museum to see artefacts including the “Golden Man”, a symbol of Kazakh history. Take the lift up Bayterek Tower for a view of the city’s modern skyline. Admire the massive Hazrat Sultan Mosque and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. Walk through green parks and tree-lined avenues that reflect the city’s vision for the future. Accommodations here offer modern amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. Nur-Sultan is a world away from the other stops on your journey.

DAY 13

Nur-Sultan

Spend your last full day in Nur-Sultan with some free time. You can choose between more city sightseeing or a trip to Burabay National Park with its lakes, rock formations and pine forests. For a more contemplative experience, visit the ALZHIR Memorial Museum and learn about the women who were imprisoned during Stalin’s time. Whether outdoors or in the city, today is time to pause and reflect on the many layers of history and nature you’ve seen during your journey across Central Asia.

DAY 14

Nur-Sultan - Departure

Your trip ends in Nur-Sultan. Transfer to the airport for your departure. If your itinerary included an overnight train, you'll remember it as a unique and memorable travel experience along this historic route. Go home with memories of the region’s history, cultures, landscapes and people.
