Dushanbe to Dushanbe – 13 Days
Uncover Tajikistan’s remote beauty and cultural depth on this 13-day journey through mountains, valleys, and ancient sites in the heart of Central Asia. Travelling along the famed Pamir Highway, you’ll experience a rarely seen world — from Dushanbe’s vibrant streets to isolated villages perched on high-altitude plateaus, all set against a stunning backdrop of towering peaks and stunning mountain scenery. Tajikistan's rich history is ever-present, from its days as part of the Soviet Union to the enduring heritage of the Tajiks, whose Iranic roots and traditions shape the region. The itinerary takes you across dramatic landscapes, alongside the Panj River with views into Afghanistan, through the Wakhan Corridor, and into timeless settlements where Tajik, Pamiri, and Kyrgyz traditions still thrive.
This immersive journey includes visits to Buddhist stupas, fortresses of the Silk Road, healing hot springs, and alpine lakes like Bulunkul and Yashilkul. Along the way, you’ll stay in homestays, yurt camps, and family-run guesthouses — connecting with locals and experiencing authentic hospitality. Whether camel trekking near Rangkul, marvelling at the Great Buddha in Dushanbe, or stargazing in Murghab, this is Tajikistan as few have seen it — raw, beautiful, and full of quiet wonder.
EXPLORE REMOTE VALLEYS AND HIGHLAND LANDSCAPES: Travel deep into Tajikistan’s mountainous heart, crossing dramatic passes and remote valleys. From the Wakhan Corridor to Bulunkul’s alpine lakes, the journey offers untouched natural beauty, where Kyrgyz herders, ancient petroglyphs, and sweeping Pamir views reveal a land still shaped by tradition and geography.
DISCOVER CULTURAL HERITAGE ALONG THE PAMIR HIGHWAY: Follow the historic Pamir Highway past ancient fortresses, Buddhist stupas, and traditional Pamiri homes. Visit Sufi shrines, ruby mines, and local museums, gaining insight into Tajikistan’s layered heritage and its links to the Silk Road. Encounters with local communities deepen the experience beyond the landmarks.
STAY IN GUESTHOUSES, YURTS AND HOMESTAYS: Experience warm Tajik hospitality in a mix of local accommodations — from Pamiri family homes to high-altitude yurt camps. These overnight stays offer rare glimpses into daily life, cultural customs, and the generosity of people who live in some of Central Asia’s most remote landscapes.
CROSS-BORDER VIEWS AND PANJ RIVER VISTAS: Drive alongside the Panj River with striking views into neighbouring Afghanistan. Witness rural life across the water, including traditional roadbuilding by hand. This intimate stretch of the journey reveals the human scale of borderlands and the shared mountain culture that links both sides of the valley.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Once you’ve had time to rest and freshen up, head out to explore Dushanbe, the capital city and Tajikistan's capital. See the old and new of the city as you visit the ancient monuments scattered around the city, each with a story to tell. As Tajikistan's capital, Dushanbe stands as a central hub of culture, history, and tourism, renowned for its vibrant culture and dynamic city life. These ancient relics offer a glimpse into the rich history and heritage of Tajik culture, showcasing the grandeur of the ancient Kushan Empire. Later enjoy authentic Tajik cuisine and traditional Tajik dishes like plov or shurbo in a local chaikhana, where you can experience the atmosphere of a traditional Tajik teahouse. After a day of discovery return to the hotel.

As you travel, you will notice the diversity of regions, each with its own unique landscape and cultural characteristics. Your destination is Qal’ai Khumb, a peaceful town by the river 236 miles away. The journey takes around 7-8 hours. Upon arrival check into a local hotel and relax for the evening. Follow the Panj River from Kalai-Humb to Khorog, one of the most beautiful drives in Tajikistan. The 161 miles route runs along the border with Afghanistan. The Panj River is a major tributary of the Amu Darya, which forms part of Tajikistan's southern border and is a vital water source for irrigation and the regional river network in Central Asia. You’ll see a big difference between the two countries, including hand built Afghan roads with no machinery in sight. After 5-6 hours driving arrive in Khorog, a lovely town surrounded by mountains. Check into a private guesthouse and enjoy the peaceful evening. The calm of this mountain town and the hospitality of the locals will make for a great stay.

Today you’ll drive 74 miles to Ishkashim, at the mouth of the Wakhan Corridor. On the way stop at Garm Chashma hot springs, famous for their healing waters and the nearby Khu i Lal ruby mines, where Badakhshani rubies are found. If it’s a Saturday you can visit the Afghan market just across the border for a unique cultural experience. Ishkashim is also connected by road to major cities in the region, making it an important hub for travellers and traders. Upon arrival in Ishkashim check into a local guesthouse where you’ll spend the night surrounded by the mountains.

Continue to the Buddhist Stupa in Vrang and the relaxing Bibi Fatima Zahra hot springs. Stop at the impressive Yamchun Fortress, once a stronghold along the Silk Road. These historical sites not only showcase the country's history but also highlight the region's connection to the direct descendants of ancient Iranic peoples, reflecting the deep history and cultural heritage of Tajikistan. Along the way, you'll pass through verdant valleys and rugged mountains, experiencing firsthand the dramatic scenery that defines Tajikistan's mountains, which cover more than 90% of the country and shape its unique geography. The journey takes 5-6 hours. In the evening arrive at a guesthouse near Bulunkul Lake. Surrounded by silence and mountains this is a perfect place to rest and relax.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Drive to Murghab, 90 miles from Bulunkul and 12,000 feet above sea level. The 3-4 hour drive will show you more of this remote region’s beauty. In Murghab visit local markets where you’ll find handmade crafts made from felt and yak hair. The region also presents economic opportunities, particularly through its energy resources such as hydroelectric potential, coal deposits, and smaller reserves of natural gas. As night falls look up – the clear sky is perfect for stargazing. Spend the night in a homestay, part of a local ecotourism initiative supporting community-based travel.

This tour was designed to unveil Tajikistan’s unparalleled beauty and rich cultural tapestry, inspired by its hidden gems and the allure of exploring the road less travelled. Tajikistan is truly a hidden gem in Central Asia, offering authentic experiences and breathtaking landscapes that remain largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism.
The inspiration came from the desire to showcase Tajikistan’s diverse landscapes, from the bustling streets of Dushanbe to the serene beauty of the Pamir Mountains, and to immerse travellers in the unique cultures and traditions of its people. The Tajik people are closely related to Iranians, sharing deep linguistic, historical, and cultural ties that reflect their Iranic roots. Additionally, Tajikistan has a historical presence of ethnic Russians, whose communities have played a significant role in the country’s social and political landscape, especially since the Soviet era.
