41 Lighthouse Street: Historic Luxury in Galle Fort

41 Lighthouse Street is a luxurious villa, set within the heart of Galle Fort, in Southern Sri Lanka. Built in the mid 1800's, during the Dutch colonial era, it was in a derelict condition when the present owner, then a bachelor found the property and decided to develop it as a "chill out" pad for friends and guests. Now painfully renovated by Sri Lanka’s RA designers, it has retained its original charm and exudes a combination of classic luxury, natural beauty and modern comfort.

Set within the ramparts of the Galle Fort, 41 Lighthouse Street has just three spacious suites. The proud entrance greets you with the original black and white chequered tiles of the early 17th-century Portuguese owners. While the internal spaces are graced with fine teak glazed screens, maximising the bedroom areas and nods respectfully at classical Japanese architecture. Outside, there is space for sunbathing, alfresco dining and refreshing swims in the exquisite pool.

The living area’s large couches provide a perfect place to read a book while the sheltered gazebo in the corner of the high-walled courtyard is a meditative idyll. The whole of 41 Lighthouse Street has been finished to the highest standards with many personal touches giving the house a homely feel. This is one of the leading private villas within the Fort and can accommodate up to six guests. The three rooms can be rented on room basis as well as an entire villa.

Experience There are two main areas to visit in Galle: the Galle Fort in which 41 Lighthouse Street is located and Unawatuna beach, known for its coral reef and its palm-lined beaches. Due to its prime location, guests at 41 Lighthouse Street are in walking distance of Galle Fort, the 17th-century citadel looking over the lighthouse and the clock tower. Activity enthusiasts can go scuba diving, sea kayaking, snorkelling, whale watching or boating in the nearby Koggala Lake.

Location 41 Lighthouse Street is located in the centre of Gall Fort, just 15 minutes away from the Galle Coast's beaches.

Getting there Fly to Colombo International Airport. From there 41 Lighthouse Street is just a scenic 4-hour drive to Galle.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
