Vil Uyana is a luxury eco hotel, set in its own purpose-built wetlands near Sigiriya in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Inspired by WWT London Wetland Centre and designed by award-winning environmental architect, Sunela Jayawardena, it is a haven for nature and birdwatchers. Spread across the 28-acre private nature reserve are stunning landscapes of paddy fields, ponds, bamboo forests and reed beds now home to spectacular species of birds and other wildlife.
Sprawled across this vast reserve, Vil Uyana has just 36 freestanding, stilted wooden dwellings. All units are spacious in size, self-contained with plenty of comfort and enjoy beautiful landscapes of different habitats. The hotel's two restaurant overlook the large communal pool, serving both Eastern and Western dishes. There's also a beautiful island spa with gym offering Ayurvedic treatments, and a resident Ayurvedic doctor.
In the surrounds, Sigiriya rock fortress is just 10 mins drive from Vil Uyana. The hotel can arrange private tours of the fort as well as of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s cultural cities. Other highlights include Dambulla's ancient Buddhist cave temples, Minneriya National Park for seeing elephants (best from July to October) and Ritigala Forest Reserve. Activities include cycling or walking and the Loris watching tour to catch a glimpse of these adorable little creatures.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry. The central hills remain cooler all year and the only months we'd recommend avoiding are October and November when rainfall is less predictable.
