The Frangipani Tree, Unawatuna

The Frangipani Tree is a stylish beachfront hotel, set on a secluded beach in the fishing village of Thalpe, on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Designed by Channa Daswatte, a protégé of the famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, Frangipani Tree is a tranquil and luxurious setting. Sheltered by a grove of palms, this bright and airy hotel has a laid-back atmosphere particularly suitable for couples looking to unwind post-sightseeing or your Sri Lanka tour.

Backed by coconut palms and fronting the Indian Ocean, the Frangipani Tree offers just 9 finely furnished suites spread across 3 villas. The stylish, minimalist interiors feature cooling cement floors, plush beds on raised platforms, pristine while walls and high timbered ceilings. Rooms have glass-walled windows, courtyards with frangipani trees and ensuite bathrooms with separate open-air tubs for a cool refreshing bath.

Delicious meals are served on a large communal table in a shaded, cool veranda. The chefs at Frangipani Tree put in much effort to prepare dishes with freshest ingredients using seafood supplied by local fisherman and create the right dining ambience. Activities begin on the hotel’s door step with seven species of marine turtles hatching on the nearby shores. For those interested in surfing and watersports, the nearby beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa are ideal.

Stay

Frangipani Tree has just 9 air-conditioned suites spread across 3 villas. Each of the spacious suites have high open-beamed ceilings with stylish, minimalist interiors featuring cement washed floors, four-poster beds, plush sofa and a writing desk. While most rooms have verandas or private terraces that open out towards the Indian Ocean, there are two suites that are set back from the beach and open out onto a courtyard lined with flowering Frangipani trees and the swimming pool.

ChildCare

Families with children are welcome to stay at The Frangipani Tree, but there are no specific facilities available for children.

Dine

The in-house restaurant at the Frangipani Tree offers a wonderful choice of traditional Sri Lankan curries and Mediterranean cuisine prepared using the freshest of ingredients. A simple breakfast can be served on your terrace at a time of your choosing. The restaurant specialises on seafood, so you can expect lots of it on the menu for lunch and dinner. Opt for grilled calamari, fresh yellowfin tuna or the magnificent lobster curry, a very popular dish for which pre-booking is advisable.

Relax

Facilities at the Frangipani Tree hotel include a swimming pool and tennis court. In-room massages and private yoga sessions can be arranged on request. Spa treatments can be organised at the neighbouring hotel or within Galle at one of the hotels. To help guests focus on the environment, none of the suites have an in-room television or telephone, but Wi-Fi is available throughout most of the property.

Experience

Situated close to the Frangipani Tree hotel is Unawatuna beach, known for water-based activities such as swimming in the ocean, scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing and deep-sea fishing. A few kilometres east of Unawatuna, are the unspoilt and quieter beaches at Dalawela and Thalpe. To the West is the magnificent Galle Fort while in the South is the beach resort town of Mirissa, from where you can take Whale and Dolphin watching excursions.

Location Frangipani Tree is set at the edge of a secluded beach in the fishing village of Thalpe, ideally located to explore the diverse southern heritage and the sun-kissed beaches of the south coast.

Getting there Fly to Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. From the airport to we recommend leaving 4-hours for the journey to The Frangipani Tree.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
