Claughton House is a beach front villa, perched on a hillside outside the town of Tangalle in Southern Sri Lanka. Designed by the country’s most famous architect, Geoffrey Bawa, the villa features his signature verandas, courtyards and open-side pavilions. From the splendour of the property, manicured gardens stretch down to the turquoise infinity pool, providing an intermittent barrier from the beach below. This is an ideal setting in Sri Lanka, for a dose of unadulterated bliss.
Accommodation at the Claughton House comprises of just five suites, spread out in two separated buildings. Three rooms are in the main house and the other two are in separate buildings which can be accessed by a covered walkway. A small team of staff including an expert chef and butler ensure every need is met; cooking, children’s entertainment, safari trips and more. There is a small white sandy beach which is suitable for swimming and snorkelling between December and April.
The concierge at the Claughton House can arrange excursions to Kalametiya bird sanctuary, Yala Safari Park and the beaches around Tengalle. There are popular spots for swimming, surfing and snorkelling in the nearby Medilla Natural Swimming Area and to the east Rekawa Beach, where children will enjoy turtle watching. With so much to do in the surrounds, this is a perfect place for a group of family and friends to enjoy a relaxed holiday in Sri Lanka.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
