Rosyth Estate, Kegalle

Rosyth Estate is a boutique bungalow, set on a working tea and rubber plantation near Kegalle town in Central Sri Lanka. Built in 1926, this colonial planter’s bungalow, once belonged to the well know author Michael Ondaatje’s family. Now owned by Farzana and her husband Neil Marikkar with 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, they have restored this old colonial house and refurbished the rooms with modern amenities to provide a comfortable living space.

Sitting amidst a 62-acre farm, Rosyth Estate has just nine rooms and suites. All are individually designed to reflect the colonial style of the property. Expect high ceilings, cool polished floors, wide verandas and elegantly furnished rooms with comfortable beds, antiques and local art. These simple luxuries are spurred by home-cooked meals, served in a glass-walled wooden pavilion with views over the jungle-clad hillside – the overall feeling being in a giant pod, high-up in the trees.

There are walking trails and mountain biking routes within the Rosyth Estate, passing through the tea terraces, rubber plantation and down to the paddy fields. You will discover species of monkey including Langurs and Grey and Red Loris’, as well as numerous species of birds & occasionally a wild deer. At the bottom of the estate is an old rubber press and smoke house, where on a hot day, you can cool down in the small waterfall.

Breakfast includes homemade yogurt, spicy scrambled eggs and fresh bread. Lunches are light on the palate and elaborate dinners include Sri Lankan street food feasts to dahls, spicy fish curries and coconut rice.

Relax

For relaxation, Rosyth Estate has a tranquil L-shaped pool and the Rock Spa, which offers a fusion of traditional Sri Lankan and Asian treatments. There is complimentary introduction to yoga every morning. After breakfast head to walking or biking through the estate's paddy fields and jungle terrain. And, during the heat of the day, relax in the gardens with a book from the library, or relax on the veranda overlooking the vibrant flora and fauna.

Experience

Guests at Rosyth Estate, located near Kegalle, are well placed to explore its cave temples, rich rubber and spice cultivations and the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Located just 30 minutes away, guests can feed baby elephants and watch them bathe in the local river. The more adventurous can climb the sacred mountain - Adam's Peak – that lies three hours away from Rosyth and is hiked by many at night to watch the sunrise over the mountains.

Location Rosyth Estate is located just 10-minutes from Kegalle town west of Kandy. The hotel sits on a working tea and rubber plantation.

Getting there Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport. From there Rosyth Estate is a 2-hour drive by private car.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. However, it barely gets unbearably hot in the Hill Country. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, when days are warm (around 28C) with cool nights. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here when there’s almost no rain at all.
