Uga Bay – Beachfront Resort in Passikudah, Sri Lanka

Uga Bay by Uga Escapes is a luxurious beachfront resort nestled on the serene shores of Pasikudah Bay on Sri Lanka’s unspoilt east coast. Renowned for its crescent-shaped bay and one of the longest shallow coastlines in the world, Pasikudah is a haven for beach lovers and marine enthusiasts. Uga Bay enjoys a prime location on the widest stretch of beach, bordered by the palm-fringed sands of Kalkudah to the south and the famed Trincomalee Harbour to the north—an ideal departure point for whale watching tours between May and September.

This stylish coastal resort offers 46 spacious studios, suites, and villas, all arranged within elegant two-storey structures, each room featuring contemporary design and private balconies. At the heart of the resort lies a palm-lined garden and an inviting infinity pool, which looks out towards the turquoise bay. The main restaurant serves a mix of continental and authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, with a special focus on fresh seafood. Tucked away by the shoreline is the Uga Spa, offering Asian-inspired therapies with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean.

Pasikudah’s calm, shallow waters and vibrant coral reef make it one of the best spots in Sri Lanka for safe swimming, snorkelling, and water sports. Guests at Uga Bay can take part in a range of marine adventures including jet skiing, sailing, and sea fishing—organised through a cooperative run by nearby resorts. For a more memorable marine encounter, dolphin and whale watching excursions can be arranged through Uga Bay’s sister property, Jungle Beach by Uga Escapes, just north of Trincomalee.

Stay Uga Bay offers just 46 light and airy rooms grouped in four categories. These are set around a semi-circular, sliver beach allowing uninterrupted views of the sea. The 22 Beach Studio rooms have direct access to the beach while the top floor, 22 Ocean Studios enjoy vantage views of the sea. Those who want more privacy and space can book the two-bedroom Bay Suite or the enormous 250sqm Beach Villa, both with their own private plunge pools and in-house dining rooms.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Uga Bay but there are no specific facilities available for children. However, they will enjoy the open spaces, the beach and the pool.

Dine The resort’s Uga Bay Restaurant offers wide vistas of the swimming pool, set within its palm-tree lined manicured lawns and the Indian Ocean. A team of local chefs serve a fusion of Continental and Sri Lankan dishes with a focus on sea food, sourced from local fishermen. Meals are served indoors or al fresco on the deck in buffet style with options for a la carte. Private dining can be arranged in Poolside cabanas, on the beach or in the privacy of your own villa.

Relax Facilities at the Uga Bay Resort include an underground spa with sea views. It offers typically Asian such as Balinese massages, facials, and Ayurveda inspired therapies. Massages can be provided in Poolside cabanas while couples’ treatments are available on request, and a spa therapist can be summoned to your villa. There is also a well-equipped gym.

Experience Situated on Sri Lanka’s northeast coast, Pasikudah was a popular tourist destination until it suffered devastation following the 2004 tsunami. Uga Bay now offers a variety of activities in the region to include cycle rides to nearby fishing villages and to Batticaloa Lagoon known for its stunning landscape and rich birdlife. Day excursions include the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a Unesco site and Batticaloa, known for its cultural and historical landmarks including the Old Dutch Fort.
