Cape Weligama Resort is located in the south of Sri Lanka, fronting the Indian Ocean. It’s flanked by two beaches which are mostly deserted and are suitable for swimming, a rarity on the Sri Lankan coast. It also makes for an interesting lookout point to watch the mischievous dolphins who put on a fantastic show in the waters not far, where the largest sea creatures, the humpback and the blue whales, nonchalantly glide past.
In this undeniably romantic setting with uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean, Cape Weligama offers secluded residences with subtle interiors. The property is owned by the famous Dilmah tea family who have also owned Ceylon Tea Trails known for its quality and service. Cape Weligama is another step into their vision to establish itself as one of the best luxury beach options in Sri Lanka as an alternative to the Maldives, where many tourists spend the last few days of their trip to Sri Lanka.
Cape Weligama Resort has 40 terracotta-roofed villas, set within stonewalled wattas, or gardens. The layout is carefully designed with each freestanding residence set at an angle to the next, so that each has a certain level of privacy. The resort has a terrace-style design so you can see the coast from almost anywhere. Each residence has its own private veranda and one pool, shared between three residences. There is also a 60-m long pool for adults and activities include guided bike rides to surrounding lakes, temples and villages.

When to go The best time to visit Sri Lanka is between December and April when it’s drier and the climate is cooler. It’s also the peak time for whale-watching in the south where blue and sperm whales can be seen. From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern coast and the cultural triangle. However, the hill country around Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains and Bandarawela remains cooler. Rains may also occur between September and November.
