The Peninsula Shanghai

The Peninsula Shanghai was the first major building constructed on the Bund in over 60 years. Built in its signature 1920s art-deco style, it fits seamlessly into the Bund skyline, alongside some of the finest Art-Deco architecture in the world. Inside, straight lines run through wooden furniture, walls and mirrors. Marble bathrooms and deep sofas are mixed with breath-taking Huangpu River and Shanghai skyline views.

As you enter the Peninsula Shanghai's pillared hotel lobby, you are greeted with smooth mellow music from a string quartet. Its opulent public spaces include a 25-metre pool and an ESPA spa. The Yi Long Court is The Peninsula’s Michelin starred restaurant, known for Cantonese cuisine. Sir Elly’s restaurant at the top floor, offers a fish-eye view of the Bund; the creek, Hongkou, and the elegant curve of the Huangpu.

The Bund recently underwent a $732 million renovation that included a sparkling pedestrian walkway and widened streets, which are now dominated by luxury shops and a few art galleries. If you enjoy Art Deco architecture then it would be hard to beat for a stroll of the neighbourhood. The area is beautifully maintained right down to the cobbled streets.

Stay The Peninsula Shanghai has 235 guestrooms & suites. The guestrooms are grouped in Superior, Deluxe and the expansive Grand Deluxe Rooms, all with city or river views. These are decorated with a calming taupe-and-blue colour scheme, leather headboards, Art Deco features and stylish modern furniture. For enhanced privacy and opulence, the hotel has a wide choice of suites with extra living and dining environment, fireplaces and balconies. The Palace Suite is perfect for prestigious events, from product launches to weddings and cocktail parties.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at The Peninsula Shanghai and there are interconnecting rooms available for families. Special bathroom clothing and toiletries, sleeping equipment such as cots and babysitting service can be provided, on request.

Dine The Peninsula Shanghai has three signature restaurants and two bars. The sleek Sir Elly’s is one of the best fine-dining spots in the city, and the traditional Yi Long Court serves excellent Cantonese fare. Take the much-celebrated Peninsula afternoon tea, at The Lobby or pair a classic Martini with a light snack at The Compass Bar. Weather permitting; its garden terrace is a perfect al fresco option. Later, enjoy a bottle of Salon de Ning Rosé Champagne accompanied by live music.

Relax The Spa at the Peninsula Shanghai, is dedicated to restoring energy and balance through world-class treatments, from holistic healing to state-of-the art modern therapies. The Fitness Centre has top-of-the-range cardio and strength training machines with built-in individual televisions. It also has expert personal trainers at your disposal. Refresh yourself at the stunning Art Deco-inspired pool with a full-length skylight or use the indoor heated swimming pool is perfect for laps.

Experience Located in front of the Peninsula Shanghai, and near the Huangpu River is a small stretch of green, known as the Huangpu Park with an interesting history that dates back to the late 19th-century. Its past is best forgotten but the site has an impressive Monument to the People's Heroes, commemorating those who helped to free China from foreign occupation. The Bund Historical Museum there is worth a visit, which documents the history of the Bund in old photographs.

Location Set on Shanghai’s world-famous Bund, The Peninsula Shanghai blends with its landmark neighbours known for their historic architecture. Built in art-deco style of the mid-19th-century, this historic hotel stands, where Huangpu River makes a bend at the heart of the city, offering great views of the Shanghai’s skyline.

Getting There International passengers will arrive at the Pudong International airport (PVG) served by major airline carriers. It is approximately 45 minutes by car to the city centre but the magnetic-levitation train takes less than eight minutes. If you are not staying in Pudong then it is faster and wiser to take a taxi. Domestic travellers will land at Shanghai Airport (SHA) which is about 25 minutes from the city centre on the western side of Shanghai.

When to go The best time to visit Shanghai is during March-April and September to early November. Winter is windy and chilly. July and August are unpleasantly hot and humid. September and October are ideal months but they’re also very popular times for meetings and conventions. To avoid big crowds and enjoy good weather visit late March or late October-November. Avoid the two golden weeks; 01-03 May and from 01-07 Oct when the Chinese have their long holiday.
