Shangri-La Chengdu

Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu is a stylish high-rise hotel, towering over tiny ancient pagodas and office buildings. Located in the history-rich city of Chengdu, and close to picturesque rivers, grand bridges and streets full of hibiscus flowers and gingko trees, it forms a good base from which to visit the Panda Research Centre. Though decadent in its outward form, it reserves a homely atmosphere with ever smiling and welcoming staff.

The Shangri-la Chengdu resort is a large property with 593 guest rooms that are soothing and spacious, tastefully decorated with sophisticated oriental-style fittings. Marbled bathrooms are large, with a separate tub and shower cubicle. Located beside the Jiajiang River, our room had a spectacular view of the Hejiang Pavilion and the beautiful garden along the riverside where the locals practice Tai Chi in the morning.

In the surrounds of Jinjiang district and Shangri-la Chengdu are picturesque paths and green spaces to explore at leisure. Chengdu is a historical city that dates back to 2,400 years and has a number of historical sites, including temple of Wuhouci, located in the southern suburb. Not far is the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Centre. We saw the elegant-looking black-neck cranes, black and white swans leisurely cruising in the tranquil lake and peacocks demonstrating their majestic tail feathers on the lawns. The Pandas… were huge, like a Japanese sumo and ready for a fight.

Stay Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu has 593 rooms and suites. Deluxe Rooms offer spacious comfort with contemporary décor and views of the elegant city centre or the Jinjiang River. Horizon Club Rooms have additional privileges of the Horizon Club Lounge, and are an excellent choice for the business traveller. For extra space and comfort, book Executive Suites that feature one-bedroom suite with spacious sitting room and access to the Horizon Club Lounge.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at The Aman at Summer Palace, but there are no specific facilities available. Babysitting can be arranged, on request.

Dine Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu is home to some of the finest traditional and international restaurants in Chengdu. Shang Palace, the hotel’s main restaurant serves some of the city's finest Cantonese and Sichuanese dishes. Café Z features the best view of the historical bridge and river, and a wide variety of selections from different-themed food stations. Mooney’s serving western cuisine offers the best steaks in town. And Lobby Lounge is an ideal venue for both business and social gatherings.

Relax If you are a spa fan then don’t miss Chi, The Spa. Inspired by Asian healing philosophies, there are 11 private spa suites offering herbal steam facilities. After a full day of exploring the Mt. Emei and Leshan Giant Buddha I went for a foot massage. Never had I known that I could walk on the clouds. Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu also offers a superbly equipped Fitness Centre, including an indoor swimming pool. It also has a Jacuzzi, Sauna, Steam Room and Tennis Courts.

Experience Sichuan contains many sites sacred to Buddhism in China. Mount Emei is one of the four sacred Buddhist Mountains in China. Check with the front desk at Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu, and they will be happy to book the tours. Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Centre is about 30 min away, depending on traffic. The best time to visit is in the morning, during feeding time between 8:30 and 10:00. After then, it's likely that the bears will be indulging in their favourite pastime. Sleeping!

Location Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu is located in the F&B zone at the centre of the Chengdu city. It is conveniently positioned within 15-minute drive from the high-speed train station, a 10-minute walk from the Confucius temple, and short walk from Yihe Park, where you can watch locals practising tai chi.

Getting There Chengdu is the largest aviation hub in central and western China, and aims to form the national aviation hub in mainland China. Also, all trains west run through Chengdu. There are links from every major city in China, including high speed rail links to Chongqing, and a high-speed CRH Line from Shanghai through Wuhan to Chengdu.

When to go The best time to visit Chengdu is either March to June or September to November. Chengdu has a subtropical monsoon climate. Summer is relatively hot due to the city’s location in the Sichuan basin. The rainy season comes in July and August, and it remains dry in spring and winter. Fall is cool and breezy, while winter is relatively warm, and the temperature seldom drops below 5°C. Surrounded by high mountains all around, Chengdu is generally foggy and humid.
