Aman At Summer Palace

The Aman at Summer Palace, located besides the Summer Palace, is a sprawling compound of historic and historic-looking buildings. Housed in a series of century old pavilions, once used by guests of the Palace. The resort is within easy access to such cultural landmarks as the Great Wall, The Temple of Heaven and the hutongs.

The luxurious Aman at Summer Palace provides 51 rooms and suites, all of which surround an internal courtyard crisscrossed by stately pathways, shaded by bamboo and indigenous trees. Floors are finished in Jin clay tiles polished to a deep lustre, and ceilings are mostly open to exposed wooden roof beams and structural columns. There is an expansive Imperial Suite with 3 separate pavilions with a lounge area, dining area and private courtyard.

Dining options available at the Aman at Summer Palace include Imperial dishes inspired from the royal houses of the Ming Dynasty. There is also French Kaiseki and Western menu, all served in stunning and unique settings. After a day exploring Beijing’s sights, find time to unwind at the Aman Wellness for a massage, using ancient healing remedies or choose for holistic body treatment. There is also a large indoor lap pool.

Stay The Aman at Summer Palace has converted a collection of dwellings into 51 dramatic guest rooms spread across nine courtyards, most of them part of the original 1750 construction. These are furnished with authentically designed Ming Dynasty style furniture, Jin clay tiles, wooden screens and bamboo blinds crafted from traditional materials. Guestrooms are housed in a two-storey structure, while Deluxe Suites and the spacious Courtyard Suites are on the ground floor. The Imperial Suite has 3 separate pavilions and includes a lounge area, dining area and private courtyard.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at The Aman at Summer Palace, but there are no specific facilities available. Babysitting can be arranged, on request.

Dine Aman at Summer Palace has a few restaurants on-site, ranging from true ethnic cuisine to International dishes. Naoki, named after the prestigious chef Naoki Okumura, combines French technique with Japanese artistry. If you miss the Western cuisine, then visit Grill that serves grilled-to-order prime cuts of meat and fresh seafood. The Chinese Restaurant decorated with classic, Ming Dynasty-inspired furniture, consists of nine rooms, which are available for private dining and serves Cantonese cuisine.

Relax To relax, Aman at Summer Palace has created an amazing nine-room underground spa, state of the art fitness studio, two squash courts and an 82-foot indoor swimming pool. The hotel’s roughly seven-acre grounds include a Pilates and yoga studio. But what was a treat for me was to see a movie in a luxurious private cinema with 37 reclining plush seats.

Experience There are two experiences that you don’t want to miss during your stay at the Aman at Summer Palace. The first is an afternoon in the Cultural Room, where you can watch the resident calligrapher demonstrate the ancient art. You can even book a private demonstration of Chinese Calligraphy, paper cutting and even storytelling and kite flying. The second is time spent near the Music Pavilion where to a rotating set of local musicians play traditional Chinese music.

Location The Aman at Summer Palace, sits on Kunming lake, with its own private gate into the gardens of the Summer Palace, that guests can use to visit at dawn and dusk. Before the gates have opened to the public, guests can take the East Gate of the Summer Palace that is only a few steps from the hotel, allowing for unique morning tours of the beautiful grounds.

Getting There Beijing International Airport is about 19 km northeast of the city centre. Taxis are plentiful and can take you to the Aman, Summer Palace in about 45 mins, depending on traffic. Adventurers can take a 23-min train ride to a fairly central station in Beijing. Unless you are fluent in Mandarin, have the address of your hotel written out in Chinese. If you get lost, ask. Beijingers are friendly and willing to help. Hint: The younger the person is, the more likely he or she is to speak some English.

When to go The best time to visit Beijing is during autumn (September to early November) when the skies are clear and the weather is at its comfortable best. The second-best time is spring; late March to mid-May, when winds blow away the pollution but sometimes bring clouds of scouring sand for a day or two, turning the sky a livid yellow (great for pictures). From May onwards the mercury begins to surge well over 30°C until the rains arrive. The months of July and August are sultry and humid.
