Brickyard Retreat | Luxury Holidays in China | AsianGeographicalAdventures.com

Brickyard Beijing is an eco-hotel, set in a small valley under Mutianyu Great Wall near Beijing in Northeast China. This property is unique. Jim Spear, an American and his wife Liang Tang discovered this rundown glazed tile factory in the early 2000. And, although they were appalled to see its state, it also had incredible view of forested ridges topped by the imposing Great Wall. They decided to keep the story alive and now fully resorted it is an incredibly special boutique hotel.

Set in a private garden surrounded by fields and orchards, the Brickyard hotel features just 25 rooms in the main house. There are also nine 'houses' that are scattered throughout the village, perfect for families and small groups travelling together. There are no TVs, just beautiful floor to ceiling windows, exposed brick, crisp comfortable beds and contemporary open bathrooms. Some rooms have private terraces with views over the Great Wall.

At the heart of the hotel is the Brickyard Lodge, offering locally sourced, country style cuisine, including pork dumplings, pan fried steak, and grilled trout. Meals can be taken in the dining room or on the patio overlooking a lovely garden. For those who want to relax, there are two spa treatment rooms, an outdoor Jacuzzi and yoga platform. During the day, guests can explore the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall and meet local families and learn about their traditional way of life.

Most of them sleep between five and ten people and have open spaces for children to run around and play games. Kid’s Corner offering supervised programs for kids 4 to 8 most weekends seasonally. Jim and Liang also have a huge commitment to children and their learning.

Dine The in-house restaurant at the Brickyard serves a hearty breakfast with freshly-baked pastries, local apricot jam, and sausages supplied by village farmers. Light meals are served during the day which can be taken al fresco on the patio or in the dining room with a turquoise and peppermint tiled roof emblazoned with yellow dragons. For something more substantial hit for The Schoolhouse, around 20 minutes by foot or eat in one of the local restaurants in the village nearby.

Relax In the spring and fall, the Brickyard offers complimentary Sunday morning yoga with guidance from a professional instructor. Yoga mats, fresh towels, water and herbal teas are supplied. There is a small spa where guests can enjoy personalised massages in one of two private treatment suites or in your exclusive Gold Suite which offers a sauna, private courtyard, and outdoor shower. Play mahjong in the Card Room, relax in the lobby or soak in the Great Wall views from the Rooftop Terrace.

Experience The Brickyard hotel is on doorstep of the Great Wall, for which you should budget at least half a day. It lies close to Mutianyu Village, one of four villages in the little valleys under Mutianyu Great Wall connected by trails through orchards and pine forests. Each of these villages has its own history and the best way to get a sense for life in the countryside is to get on your feet and go exploring. Brickyard can arrange private tours to the Great Wall, as well as village tours on foot and bike.

Location The Brickyard is located approximately 1 hour northeast of central Beijing and is just 1.3km from the Mutianyu entrance to the Great Wall. The hotel is located in the wonderful Mutianyu village, whereas The Schoolhouse is in nearby Mutianyu Village.

Getting there The Brickyard is about 60km from the Beijing international airport, a journey that normally takes 1 hour if the traffic is clear. Transfers are available between the resort and the airport on arrival and departure.

When to go Beijing enjoys four distinctive seasons owning to its humid continental climate, ranging from very warm during the summer to chilly and dry during the winter. Autumn is the optimal season to visit Beijing as the weather is gorgeous and fewer tourists are in town. In winter, it’s glacial outside and the northern winds cut through the city. Arid spring is OK, apart from the awesome sand clouds that sweep in from Inner Mongolia and the static electricity that discharges everywhere.
