Amanyangyun

Amanyangyun is a peaceful sanctuary, set on the outskirts of Shanghai, Eastern China. The hotel has spent a decade renovating a village complex of Ming- and Qing-dynasty homes and gardens, sensitively transforming them into an expansive holiday retreat. It’s a testament to one man’s passion and perseverance to transport these 10,000 trees and 50 residences, 800 kilometres from Jiangxi Province – where they were threatened with destruction from the building of a reservoir.

Surrounded by ethereal camphor forest, Amanyangyun houses just 37 reassembled dwellings with original carvings. Crafted to balance old and new, its living spaces pay tribute to the structure of the classic Chinese courtyard home. Across the courtyard are six dedicated rooms to host traditional tea and incense ceremonies while, facing the entrance is the Emperor Tree, a visual reminder of the value of maintaining a connection with history, and guests invited to nourish the tree with water.

The spiritual heart of Amanyangyun resort is Nan Shu Fang, the cultural complex that has been created from the most architecturally impressive antique building to have made the journey from Fuzhou. Set around an impressive central courtyard, is the spacious Aman Spa with extensive relaxation areas, a sauna, plunge pool, Jacuzzi and two swimming pools. The rule to respect your culture and nature applies even to its kitchens which offers garden-to-plate cuisines.

Stay Amanyangyun features just 37 rooms, ranging from one-bedroom Courtyard Suites to four-bedroom Antique Villas. Each of these are utterly spacious, dressed in earthy palette with king-sized beds, sumptuous living spaces and stunning bathrooms. Most open out onto tranquil courtyards and with views of the glossy green camphor forest while others have private gardens and swimming pools. Elsewhere there are 30 refined Aman Residences which are for exclusive use.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Amanyangyun. Its Cultural Discovery Centre offers host of experiences, each designed to help the resort’s younger guests unearth the rich culture of China. Children can visit the resort’s organic farm and learn about traditional Chinese farming techniques whilst programmes include Chinese lantern making, paper cutting, pottery moulding and tea ceremonies, as well as Chinese shadow puppet shows.

Dine The Amanyangyun resort is home to six dining venues. The Chinese restaurant offers dishes first conceived during the Ming and Qing Dynasties with Cantonese classics including an inventive array of tofu-based plates. Nama, brings the flavour-led simplicity of Japan’s washoku tradition, while the lakeside Arva, draws inspiration from Italy’s farm-to-table gastronomic tradition. guests can head to The Bar for expertly crafted cocktails or afternoon tea around an antique fireplace.

Relax Set around an impressive central courtyard, the Aman Spa is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the Aman collection. The complex houses ten treatment rooms, a sauna, plunge pool, Jacuzzi and two swimming pools; indoor and out. Two private Spa Houses each offer a suite of thermal facilities, including a Russian banya and Turkish hammam. There is also a fitness centre with a Pilates and yoga studio overlooking serene views over Amanyangyun’s lake and forest gardens.

Experience Guests who can peel off from the Amanyangyun’s luxurious space can explore Shanghai city. At its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with art-deco and colonial-era buildings. Spend a day walking down the 3km NanJing Road, the hub of Shanghai’s shopping or head to Moganshan Road for the city’s contemporary art scene. Back at the resort, you can take first-hand course and information on how to preserve nature, heritage and community.
