Four Seasons Hangzhou – Tranquil Oasis in China

Four Seasons Hangzhou lies on the banks of West Lake amid acres of landscaped gardens. A little gem, built in Jiang Nan style – pagoda roof pavilions, rows of red columns and traditional Chinese water gardens. It may seem quite understated at first glance, but step inside, and you are confronted by a dazzling interior that combines both Chinese and Western elements in a tour de force of contemporary design.

The accommodations at Four Seasons Hangzhou are appropriately restful, with wood- and silk-panelled walls complemented by subdued shades of dove gray, pale yellow and cream. As you would expect from Four Seasons, all contemporary amenities are provided, and the marble baths are peerlessly well-appointed and equipped with soaking tubs as well as walk-in showers. The public areas, however, are intended to amaze, and no expense seems to have been spared to create an overwhelming impression.

The spa at the Four Seasons, Hangzhou has 9 treatment rooms offering traditional Chinese and Asian therapies. There are two restaurants including Jin Sha, which specializes in Shanghainese and regional cuisine. In the hotel grounds are a mesmerizing flow of flower-rimmed footpaths, ponds, streams, bridges and glorious greenery of all kinds that you need to walk to get the full picture. Excursions include tours around the lake on traditional wooden boats, complete with a picnic lunch arranged by the hotel.

Stay Four Seasons Hangzhou has 78 rooms, suites & villas, including five suites and three opulent, residential-style villas for families and larger parties. Most rooms open to a terrace conservatory and boast stunning views of the traditional gardens or West Lake. Premier Rooms are more spacious while Grand Premier Rooms have a terrace conservatory, as well as a seating area with a Chinese garden or pond. For spacious living, book Lake Suite, Lotus Suite or the Lagoon Suite with a large open-air terrace.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at Four Seasons Hangzhou. There is a kid’s room with a range of toys and a games room for older children that includes table football, a big screen TV for movies and an Xbox. Babysitting can be arranged, on request.

Dine Four Seasons Hangzhou has two restaurants, a lobby lounge and a bar. These include Jin Sha, specialising in fine Shanghainese, Cantonese and local cuisine. Situated on the ground floor, is the all-day Asian restaurant WL Bistro, with a choice of indoor or relaxed alfresco dining on the terrace, overlooking the infinity pool and the enchanting West Lake. Nestled beside the front reception area is the Lobby Lounge. Traditional tea service highlights Hangzhou’s famous green tea, Longjing.

Relax The astonishing spa at the Four Seasons Hangzhou has a huge indoor pool surrounded by pillow-strewn alcoves. The nine treatment rooms, each with a marble sunken tub and delicate pink lighting, are among the most lavish and exquisite I have ever seen. Overlooking the gardens, the fully equipped Fitness Centre offers the latest in cardiovascular equipment.

Experience Find time to watch the sensational Impressions of the West Lake. This modern opera, retelling old legends, is directed by filmmaker Zhang Yimou, with music by Kitaro and a theme song by Zhang Liang Ying, one of China’s most revered pop stars; a grand finale to a grand holiday in China. There is also a tributary of the lake that passes in front of the hotel. Four Seasons Hangzhou can arrange boats to take you through the serene backwater channels into the main lake area.
