The Floathouse River Kwai: Unique Floating Hotel in Thailand

The Floathouse River Kwai Resort is a unique floating hotel, set on the River Kwai in the Kanchanaburi, in west Thailand. Given its rather extraordinary location, the hotel can only be accessed by a short boat ride. There are 30 floating villas, each made from teakwood with thatched roofs. Every villa is elegantly furnished with hardwood furniture, in-room dining area with mini bar, air-conditioning and a covered deck with deckchairs to relax with views over the river.

Stay The Floathouse River Kwai Resort features just 30 elegant and spacious floating villas. All are tastefully decorated in Thai folk style with thatched roofs, teakwood furniture, king-size canopy beds and all-modern amenities. Each villa also features a private balcony with your own deck with deckchairs and a bench swing. The rooms are air-conditioned and en-suite with rain showers. Amenities include tea and coffee making facilities, a 32" LCD TV with satellite channels.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Floathouse River Kwai Resort, however, please note that the villa is open on three sides to the river and therefore recommend for older children. Some of the villas are able to interconnect, however these are subject to availability. The sofa in each villa can be converted into an extra bed.

Dine There is a main on-site restaurant at the Floathouse River Kwai Resort is located in the middle of the villas for easy access. Named the Pontoon Restaurant after the floating concept, it serves an international buffet for breakfast and lunch, and a la carte or set menu options for dinner. The menu has mostly Thai-inspired dishes, which can be served on the outdoor terrace. There is also a Moon Lounge and bar on an open-air wooden deck, an ideal place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. 

Relax There is no pool at the Floathouse River Kwai Resort but guests can jump into the river from your deck and float down to the end of the jetty before climbing back up (life jackets are available and recommended). There is no spa parse but traditional Thai massages are on offer in the small open-air sala for treatments.

Experience The Kanchanaburi Province is known for its historical WWII sites made famous by the 1957 film, The Bridge on the River Kwai. The Floathouse River Kwai Resort can arrange day excursions to the War Cemetery and adjacent Thailand-Burma Railway Museum. You can also visit Hellfire Pass, where the POWs carved their way through the hillside to build the railway tracks and walk across the Bridge on the River Kwai. Close to the resort is Lawa Cave, known for its dramatic stalagmites and stalactites.
 


 

Location The FloatHouse is located in the Kanchanaburi Province in the North West of Thailand, which is a 3-hour drive from Bangkok.

Getting there 11-hour international flight Bangkok International Suvarnabhumi Airport. From Bangkok, The FloatHouse is a 3-hour drive then a 10-minute boat ride.

When to go November to April are the best months to visit Kanchanaburi with the least rain. Temperatures stay moderately hot with the hottest weather in January to April. The wettest months are between July and September. Whilst the FloatHouse is open year-round, visitors should be aware that from June until October the water may be more muddy and turbulent so may not be suitable for swimming.
