Jing’s Residence – Boutique Courtyard in Pingyao

Jing's Residence is a heritage, boutique hotel, set in the ancient city of Pingyao in Shanxi province of North China. The 2,700-year-old Pingyao is one of the last remaining walled cities of China, that was made famous by Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s film Raise the Red Lantern. Today, this Ming dynasty mansion of a silk merchant, is the city’s first true luxury accommodation. Located within a stone’s throw of the ancient wall, it provides a great base from which to explore the city.

Housed within a 260-year-old mansion, Jing's Residence has 19 bamboo-floored rooms, spread around four interlocking courtyards. Inside, there are lacquer headboards and kang-style beds, all made by local artisans, and internet points seamlessly integrated into the historic decor. Its in-house restaurant, a member of Relais & Châteaux group, serves international and regional Shanxi cuisines. There are ample spaces to relax within the Residence, including a cozy bar and library.

The Jing's Residence is ideally located in the heart of the old town, so you can easily walk down its city wall and view its barbican gates that has earned Pingyao the nickname Turtle City. Pingyao itself is well-preserved and there are traditional residences, former security guard companies, old shops and even the previous government office. To the East is the Temple of City God, dedicated to the God of Wealth, and Kitchen God. Also visit the Confucius Temple, the best preserved in China.

Stay Jing's Residence has 19 meticulously renovated bedrooms and suites. All rooms reflect a unique character and are individually designed with natural materials, ancient carved wooden window frames, timber furniture, bamboo floors and rice paper ceilings. Courtyard Room are very comfortable but for more space opt for Courtyard Suites or the Master Suite, located on the second level, which has a handmade bath, a sitting area and view of Pingyao's rooftops.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Jing's Residence, but there are no specific facilities available for children. The restaurant if flexible with children's menu and babysitting service is available upon request.

Dine The Jing's Residence restaurant, which faces Pingyao’s celebrated East Street, is part of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux group. The menu showcases Shanxi’s unique provincial cuisine, based on a varied noodle culture. Meals are prepared with some of the 260 varieties of noodles available in the region along with cereal crops and local ingredients including fresh meat, fish and poultry.

Relax There is a cozy bar and a library to relax which is decorated with contemporary art sculptures. A wide range of in-residence guest activities can be tailor-made just for your stay, such as paper cutting, shoe making, noodle making classes, massage lessons. A private guided tour can also be arranged to discover the history of Ping Yao with a professor from Ping Yao University.

Experience The Ancient City of Pingyao is one of China's four best preserved old cities. Guests at the Jing's Residence are well placed to explore the Ancient City, one of the must-go attractions of Pingyao. Then take a walk along the Ming-Qing Street to realise the past prosperity of Pingyao. It was here that the first ‘bank’ in China, Rishengchang Exchange Shop was established over 200 years ago. Also visit Temple of City God and the Temple of Confucius, dedicated to a renowned educator.
