Muang La Lodge is an eco-boutique retreat, set in the remote, virgin hills of Northern Laos. Situated just north of bustling Udomxai, small and picturesque Muang La sits nestled beside the Nam Pak River and surrounded by tranquil farmland, traditional Khmu villages and rolling mountains. Once an off-the-grid spot with no tourist accommodation, Muang La Lodge now serves as a perfect launch pad to explore the region with lush green hills dotted with untouched hill-tribe villages.
Perched on the banks of the Nam Phak River, Muang La Lodge offers just 10 rooms, spread through 5 villas. All are built in traditional Laotian technique, furnished in contemporary style and equipped with modern facilities. Offering a high level of comfort in a remote corner of northern Laos, the lodge uses its bi-cultural origins to offer an experience rich in tradition and customs. Dining options include 5 course Laos/French fusion meals and quality picnic boxes when you are outdoors.
Most guests at the Muang La Lodge come to explore the northern Laos, trek through its virgin forests and meet local hill tribes. The region has fascinating scenery of Karst mountains, and wide-open valleys filled with paddy fields. In addition to trekking, you can explore on mountain bikes or 4X4 jeep safaris. At the end of the day, the main attraction here are the natural hot springs, the 4-metre jacuzzi, the lovely swimming pool and a massage parlour offering Asian therapies.
Stay Muang La Lodge has just 10 guestrooms, spread out in four wooden villas. All have white-washed walls, high vaulted ceilings, polished wooden floors and balconies looking out to the lawn or the river. The 6 Garden View rooms have either twin- or double beds, some with large tubs and separate showers. The 4 River View rooms are larger, and more eclectic in design with retro-style furniture and brightly coloured fabrics. Each has a large balcony, twin vanities and an oversized bathtub.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Muang La. Katou and Lamet, both river view rooms are furthest from reception and feel very private and are ideal for families or two couples as they have the added benefit of a shared lounge area with a coffee machine. Baby cots and extra rollaway beds are available at a small charge.
Dine The main La Sala restaurant and lounge area at the Muang La Lodge is set within an attractive wooden building, set on a raised ground with fantastic views across the river and countryside. The menu is a fine fusion of traditional Lao and French cuisine and beautifully presented. Alternatively, select the bespoke menu and choose to eat where you like; choose foie gras on toast, sushimi or mini-skewers washed down with the finest champagne in a romantic setting.
Relax Make use of the Muang La Lodge’s 4-metre elevated hot-spring baths after your day out trekking. There are also two outdoor Jacuzzis fed by a natural hot-spring which gushes at 70°C and needs to be cooled to 40-42°C for a relaxing bath. At the centre of the property is a lovely 13-metre pool lined with sun-loungers and sala for massage, perfect to unwind after an action-packed day in the city.
Experience Muang La Lodge serves as a perfect base from which to explore northern Laos. The mountains around Muang La are spectacularly beautiful and offer great opportunities for trekking and meeting many local ethnic groups. Mountain biking is also very popular. This resort can be easily combined with a resort in Nong Khiaw by taking river cruise down the Mekong which allows you to uncover picturesque limestone formations and undulating natural scenery.
